BY FAR, the most annoying noise ever.

So a couple of weeks ago, I went over a huge dip in the road at speed which probably had my car airborne an inch or so. Now there's a metal on metal type of noise coming from the rear passenger side. Everything looks intact from a visual inspection.

I can tell the sound is radiating as the wheel rotates. I just made a video which I'm going to upload once I figure out how. Keep in mind that my rear brakes already needed to be done as the rotors are warped.

Any ideas what this sound could be? Car is a 2011 E90 328i xDrive with 89xxx miles.

UPDATE: Link to video

UPDATE 10/2/15: Dealer says rear caliper is sticking & needs to be replaced along with the rotors and pads. Picture of rust build up on wheel from I guess the grinding below.

Look for a stone between the rotor and the heat shield. That's the most likely cause.

At least you're the only one who hears the noise

Video has been uploaded, Keep in mind that in person the noise is WAY louder and more obnoxious. I'll try to capture another video and upload it later.

It does sound like metal to metal grinding.

To me it sounds similar when you have very little friction material left on the brake pads and the steel backing material is grinding against the rotor.

Are your rear brake pad sensors triggered?

Could also be the brake pad retaining spring, maybe it popped free and is rubbing against the hub. Best bet is to remove the wheel and spin it by hand to see where the noise is coming from.

+1
Yeah I would jack up each wheel(unless you know the one) and give it a spin and you should be able to pinpoint the location.

Sorry OP, hope you get it figured out and get rid of the noise. With respect to being the most annoying noise in the world, I would have to disagree.

Do you run your AC a lot? Did it start happening while your AC was running? Could be the AC Compressor.

But for this to mysteriously happen right after hitting a dip in the road can't be coincidental.

Don't run my AC too often, and it was off when this occurred. Although I am having problems HVAC system. It's only hot at 84 degrees (Max), anything less and it blows cold/semi-warm air.

Jack up the rear and take the wheel off. I think you need to take a closer look. Sounds like the brake dust shield hitting the rotor or something similar.

This is exactly what it is- I've had this shit happen to me twice. Once it was so loud I was passing alongside a NJ Transit bus and thought for sure it was his shitty brakes...but when it continued as he passed me I was like fuuuuck.

Damn cars are notorious for picking shit up in their rotor shields for some godforsaken reason.

Does it happen when in park but revving? If so, yeah it's probably the serpentine pulley. Happened to me in February. That was embarrassing too. Change all belts, pulleys, and tensioners while you're at it.

It varies, it's a pulley most likely. How many miles on the car?
