autozone guy just cracked my windshield

So yeah, it was rainy today went to autozone to find a new pair of windshield wipers.

Long story short, my hand is hurt and I can't do them myself so I asked for help ( they do free installation at every autozone) everything was going great, until the guy removed the blade from the passenger side, and bamm the wiper arm slammed into the windshield, and made quiet the deep crack and a few more cracks.

I felt bad for the guy as he was new, nonetheless he said he had to report it to his manager. I actually was gonna let it slide to not get this kid in trouble on his 4th day, but if I recall replacing a windshield is a little expensive.

My question is, has anyone ever gone through this? How does it work or how long does this process take?

Last year my windshield cracked (No idea what happened, found the crack in the morning)
Fortunately I have State Farm glass protection plan. Insurance covered and replaced the windshield second day by Glass America at my house. Took less than an hour.

If your windshield has rain sensor and you do not have it covered by insurance, you better ask for their manager. Otherwise, it will cost you.

MAKE SURE THAT THEY PRIMER THE WINDSHIELD FRAME!! Only in CT is it a law that they have to do so. When they remove the windshield, they WILL scratch the factory primer underneath. After a few years, it WILL rust and the gass will sperate. This happened to my e46, and I had to sell the car because of it.

My question is, the impact really that strong? A wiper arm did it? I get rocks hitting my windshield at 70+ mph in the freeway numerous time and never made any cracks. How old is your windshield?

First rule of a tech, when you take the wiper off, lower the arm to rest against the glass. Otherwise, this is exactly what happens.

Sorry to hear OP.

Give me the last 7 of your VIN OP. I'll let you know if you have rain sensor or not.

On my second replaced windshield, my insurance glass coverage covered the rain sensor, but I did have to tell them the windshield has a rain sensor.

First, kudos for actually caring about what happened to the kid. That kind of karma comes back around.

As for the window, if you have insurance they cover a lot of it and no impact to your premiums. Just be sure to get a high quality installer and high quality window (oem if possible). Bad window installs suck.

In CA you can't drive with a cracked windshield if it is anywhere near the drivers side.

That sucks, I did this on our Honda Odyssey here at work when I was changing the wipers. The arm slipped and snapped back down on the windshield without a wiper in it.

Been there, done that. I felt like a complete idiot about it because it destroyed my windwhield. Went aftermarket cost me about 400 bucks. Going OEM will bump that cost to the $1000 range. I'd be bugging autozone for compensation, I get it that it was a mistake but either way you're going to be out cash for a mistake that wasn't caused by you.

+1 - IIRC there is even a pictogram on the OEM wiper blade box warning about this. I am so paranoid I place a folded towel under the wiper blade before I start replacement.

Did this to my 328i... Strong just of wind blew the arm right into the windshield. Now my 335i has a crack in the windshield from a rock chip on the highway.

Sounds like someone should create a thread on the correct way to do wiper blade changes... actually I never thought about this issue since I never had a problem with the arm ever hitting my windshield when I did this task. But I can't understand why car manufacturers can't just put a foam cushion on the contact point to avoid this problem (wiper arm with no blade crashing down on windshield)???

FYI not all states offer glass coverage. Last time I asked, either in Arkansas or Tennessee, you couldn't get glass coverage. It was just part of comprehensive subject to your deductible.

Autozone has procedures to deal with this. Just talk to the manager and find out their process for filing a claim to get it repaired. And if it's on their dime, insist on taking it to BMW and use BMW glass. It can make a difference with the rain sensor.
