Exclamation Water pump runs all night, drains battery

Hi,

The last two days my water pump has started to run way to much on the car, inconsistent and goes on and off several times, when I uses the key and lock the doors it stops for a short moment and then starts again. The car does not go inte limp mode or overheat and there is a good pressure of water getting pumped around in the car.

Anybody that recognize this behavior? It drains my battery every night now and even when the car is hooked up to a battery charger the water pump just keeps on running, It has never done it like this before.

Scan for codes. My only guess would be a bad sensor or a wiring issue, but even then that is weird.

I would first check your fuse box.

I had a similar problem in an older car and it was a bad rely. I am not sure if these use such technology though, but def. check for a blown fuse.

A blown fuse would cause it to not work at all.

The relay could be getting stuck (but, as mmmnot mentioned, we don't really know how it is controlled). If there is a relay, try swapping it with another relay.

Scan for codes. If the thermostat is giving a hot signal all the time, the waterpump will run all the time.

Hey I think I'm getting the same thing!!

If I get out of my car, after about a minute I hear a pump start up!

Locking or unlocking the door will stop it

2 days ago I came out to my car after about 30mins indoors and the pump was going.

My battery has been dieing lots lately, and randomly!!

If your water pump is running for no reason, then this would indeed kill the battery. Whenever one performs the coolant purge cycle it is recommended that a charger is connected for this very reason, and the purge cycle only runs for about 12 minutes, so I can imagine that if it were to run for hours on end it would drain the battery, not to mention potentially wear out or damage the pump. I would check for error codes if that hasn't already been done.

Replied on my thread too.

That is exactly the same thing as mine does, runs for hours and stops and the starts over if you lock or unlock the car

Hmm ok, so if yours has just started, prepare for your battery to die.

How do we get to the bottom of this

Did you do any mods just before this?

I had a leakage just before from the pump which I used some radiator seal and the leakage stopped, next day this problem started.

Holy crap, I noticed my car leaks water on the ground, didn't even think about it!!!

Last night when i got home, i locked the car and the pump started up. I decided to leave it alone and this morning the battery was dead.

I then used a battery jump started to get it going and drove to work.

Just now i walked out to the car, unlocked it and popped the hood to have a look, the pump started up.

I opened the coolant tank and water started pissing out from under it, cant tell when from, somewhere on the tank itself, but when i took the coolant cap off, i could see water inside being sprayed into the coolant tank, so I now know what the noise it, its definitely a pump to move coolant around.

But why does it keep turning on?

I suspect that my thermostat is brooken from the radiator sealant, I found a way on youtube to check your engine temp if the temperature shows up strange then it should be the thermostat

LOL, and my stupid E90 will just not run up higher than the mid 80 degrees Celsius! I have replaced both temperature sensors, and more recently the thermostat, all with new OEM parts. Absolutely no difference. No error codes, no strange mad cooling fan behaviour, the ECU seems to want to keep the engine temperature in Mapped High Output mode. With that said, I even had the ECU tested and updated BMW software, no difference. If the water pump was faulty, it would either throw a code, or tend to cause an over-heating issue rather than over-cooling (thermostat is typically responsible for that). Anyway, that's a bit of off topic...

He is pressing the trip meter button. The code is the sum of the numbers in the last 7 digits of the VIN number, so e.g. NG12345 would be 15. Funnily enough, checked the coolant temp this afternoon while on the move - gotten so used to doing this from time to time. LOL

For me it was the pump that had gone crazy.

Any faults, or what was wrong with it ultimately that was causing it to run endlessly?

So you had the same symptoms and replacing the pump fixed it?

- Waterpump turns on and runs for extended periods of time while car is off
- Battery dead and unable to start car

Yes precisely, I changed the waterpump and thermostat and now it works as usual.

My pump had a leakage from it and what I've read they usually start to leak inside and in to the electronics and that seams to be what caused my problem.

The new pump is a lot more quiet and runs more smoothly, the broken one went on full speed all the time.

Still going strong?

Just an FYI for you and anyone reading, check your JB4 MaxCool setting is off.

Menu 6, Option 2

Maxcool makes your radiator fan and water pump run more often.

My issues are still going, not as bad at the moment.

Thought mine was fixed after the battery change, but I went down to the car earlier and unlocked it, the pump turned on .

I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and get the water pump and thermostat changed out.
