Smart repair estimated cost

Hi All,

FACEPALM moment today. Get a call from the missus at lunch time....shes only gone and clipped the neighbours car pulling onto our drive..........sigh!!!!

Luckily there is no permanent damage to our car slight scuff and its polished out. but the neighbors is worse and no way it will polish out

I came clean to the neighbor, they are reasonable people and have taken it well so i said to him to get some quotes for repair and id do the same.

Any ideas roughly it would cost as I've never had to pay out for any paint work at all. the damage is to the front bumper right at the wheel arch area. no bigger than a *** packet.

It depends what car he's got, if it's an old Mondeo about 50p but if he's got a new 7 series I'd start making enquiries about a bigger mortgage

I'd be ok having a smart repair done for certain things, but I'm not sure I'd be happy having metal panels done.

I think it will be way more than you'd think, but without photos of the damage it is hard to say.

I've been through this pain and no bodywork companies ever just want to make it less/unnoticeable within a budget. If its just plastic damage and the paint is OK i'd try the hairdryer trick and hope it pops out. If not, from my experience body shops will want the bumper off to respray and blend and you're probably looking at £300+ the time they remove it, prep and spray it. Most of the bill when I had quotes was from removing and refitting, rather than the paint job itself.

For less money you'd actually be able to get a full panel respray. So if you want to save money, get a bumper off eBay, sand it and get a shop to spray it.

Smart repairs for scuffed corner bumpers are usually about £80-£120.

It's no big deal and this is exactly what these types of companies exist for.

Any smart repairer worth their salt could deal with any of the above.

I know a guy that could do it, but I doubt he'd go as far as essex tbh. He put some pictures up today of a Fiesta ST with a HOLE the size of a 20p piece in the front splitter - no idea how it got there - but he filler, smoother, primered and painted it, and you'd never know it had been there.

Here's a link to his FB page, it should give you plenty of pictures to compare yours with.

It's impossible to say for sure from a photo, but the first two look like they will polish out fairly easily anyway. They look bad, but a lot of that will be dirt and transference.

Unless you are heavily back to black, like in the third photo there is chance it will polish out.

Try a detailer for an honest opinion. That's what i did after being told I needed spraying work. You'll need a good photo though :P

unfortunately don't think it will polish out even by a detailer.

Might get away with a touch up with paint + wetsand + polish?

Did it myself in the end. No hassle. Looked 10x worse that it actually was.

Oh it's pretty tiny. Bit dark in the photo, but it looks like you could just have some dulling + dirt transfer and maybe a small section to be touched up. Have you cleaned it up in that photo?

Give it a clean and see what you are left with. If it's really through the paint then next step is obvious. If its not give it a polish. TBH you may as well give it a go anyway, because if its a respray the work is going to be the same anyway.

This is what mine looked like to start with (excuse the rubbish camera, there are SLR pics at home or somewhere).

I thought the black stuff was through the paint. I gave the bumper a clean and that black stuff was still left, but a good clean and most of it came off. All the scuffs polished out, even on the arches. This is after I got a quote from a shop for respray and blend...

Probably one of the easiest results I've had. I've done a few on my missus car too. It's surprising what you can get out.

Definitely give it a clean up then have a proper look.

Here's some pics of one I did ages ago that looked bloody awful, but turned out all good:

Pictures aren't the best, mobile phone cameras weren't all that great 6 years ago! LOL!

If you're passing up my way at a weekend or evening, I'll have a go at it for you if you like.
