Question regarding switching to sport steering wheel during airbag recall period
My brother just purchased a 2011 E90 335i, and it has the standard steering wheel, which is not affected by the Takata airbag recall. I would like to swap it with a sport or M3 wheel, which runs affected airbags. So if I were to switch to one of those wheels, how would I go about obtaining an updated airbag? Run an affected airbag for now, and buy an updated one once readily available?
Also, if anyone knows, is it possible to add paddle shifters (obviously purchasing a wheel with paddle shifters) to a car that didn't come with paddle shifters? If coding is required, that won't be an issue as I can do that myself. |

You would certainly need to wait to get an updated airbag, could be years to get one at this point.
To retro paddles you need this http://www.burgertuning.com/paddleshift.html Rob

Weren't all the airbags recalled for all E9x, not just sport package?

got into an accident in an e90 with a recalled airbag and the airbag deployed just fine, this was a Car which spent its entirety in SOCAL so it was never humid which seems to be the cause for the airbag however I replaced it with another airbag that was brand new and the car is still under recall, wouldn't hesitate to just use the Original one though it worked exactly as intended. Sorry this isn't much help just providing some input.

I just went through this and upgraded from a heated non-Sport wheel to a heated Sport wheel with paddle shifters. For the paddle shifters, you'll need to either make your own retrofit harness (couple DIY threads around) or buy a premade one like the BMS kit. If you go with BMS, make sure you use the compatible buttons they specify as not all buttons work (don't ask how I know...).
http://www.burgertuning.com/paddleshift.html You can buy a non-recalled airbag for only $260; see my thread here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1393846 And if you end up with SSG paddles, you can easily rewire them to function like LCI or DCT paddles by switching a couple wires around: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121524 |
