It reminds of how DTV pulled their "Black Sunday" move to stop free TV

Does a more current production BN2000 have an advantage over the earlier production years?
What is the difference between a version US and a version ECE

No difference, ECE and US pretty much use all the same modules. Only difference is how they are coded.

All BN2000 vehicles are mostly the same throughout all production years, nothing major to speak of.

BN2000 to BN2020 was more of an evolution of the vehicle electronics.

BN2000 required direct communication to each and every module in the vehicle. It was limited in it's speed by the K-CAN/D-CAN protocols to 115k and required direct access to the MOST bus for flashing the multimedia system for high-speed communications (25Mbit, if I remember correctly). And you can only flash a single module at a time.

BN2020 uses Ethernet as the primary transport which is much faster (100mbit on most cars, G series will support 1gbit), allows flashing multiple modules at a time (which greatly reduces the time updating the vehicle). No longer requires a separate MOST connection and a number of other enhancements to be faster and more reliable.

There's tons of other differences too, like data packaging, etc. But those are the highlights.

Does the speed have to do with connecting to the K-CAN or K-CAN2, dependent on the Combox used? Am I limited to the Combox that I can use on an 09 E92?

KCAN2 is only found in F-series vehicles with the NBT system.

You have to use a Combox designed for the BN2000 vehicles (like the E-series). You can't use an F-series combox in a E-series vehicle, they are different.

I notice that some BN2000 units for sale are equipped with GPS and some are not. What is the advantage of without GPS and with GPS in the Combox

That's the difference between Combox Media and Combox Telematics.

Combox Media only is for USB/Apps/etc. No BMW Assist services.

Combox Telematics does everything the Media goes, but has the telematics module for BMW Assist (which includes a GPS so it can relay it's position in case of accident).

If you're retrofitting, it doesn't matter which you get because BMW doesn't allow retrofitted units to register for BMW Assist, and those units won't work on the cellular network anyway after December 2016 because they use 2G modems which are being shut down at the end of this year.

I really appreciate you thoroughly explaining the answers to my many questions. My major purchases for converting my Non I Drive are complete. I really wish I could secure the in-depth file that the "First Lieutenant" "Booster4075" created. It was one of the major documents to read and re-read in 2013, when I first started investigating my desire. Unfortunately my download cant be found. I remember a phase that he expressed regarding "these cars are literal technological masterpieces". I know things have changed, but the basis of his tutorial hasn't.
