Old People Smell

I don't mean to offend anyone but my wife and I acquired a 2008 X5. It doesn't smell bad but about a week to two weeks after detailing and I get the old man car smell back. I have cleaned the carpets, deep cleaned and conditioned the leather. The only thing I have not touched is the cloth above our head. I have never felt safe touching the cloth on top due to sagging. Is there a way to get that leathery BMW smell back? Thank you and sorry if this offends anyone.

I have both. CG scent doesn't last long in the X5 but last for at least a month in my 335. I thought maybe I didn't use enough but that doesn't seem the case. It just starts to overpower the leather smell and then takes over the smell. There must be some sort of chemical in humans when they mature to give them this FUNK.

May I ask how you can tell it's indeed an old mans smell?

That is just what it smells like. I have never smelt anything like this before besides in the older vehicles. I guess it could be mildew or something.

It's probably in the ventilation system....many cars get this if you don't use the fresh air instead of recirculated cycle and after using air conditioner.....I think the moisture feeds some bacteria/organic matter in the system giving off the bad smell.

Are you sure it's old people scent?

It might be just some grungy hippy type that didn't bathe, farted on the seats, ate in the car, and had sex in the car.

Check your car with black light !

I know it belonged to a 65+ year old doctor. I was messing with the GPS and back tracked to him. The funny thing is he is the partner at the office I go to. When I mentioned that I had his X5 he started listing off all the stuff that should be fixed on it. I almost started jotting down some of the things he was mentioning. He traded it in on a VW Touareg. I could live with sex and candy smell. Lol

Its a bit of an expensive solution but if you leave an Ionizer in the car with all the doors closed and the heat blasting on high it should help get rid of stubborn smells by actually removing the bacteria that causes the smell. Then I would fallow with your preferred spray scent.

Heres a cheap one I found https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/ho...c-8f8567f2614b

Change the cabin air filter and run the A/C more often without recirculate on. The A/C system may need to be cleaned and or the evaporator.

You can run the AC with the heat on. It will still produce heat.

Running the AC can clean some of it out however there is a physical way of flushing the system too, done by professionals.
