Hi all,

I sent my car off for a fixing to replace my gearbox (my 2nd gear had failed - I bought a second hand gearbox), but my mechanic is telling me that the gearbox is wrong.

My old Gearbox shows these numbers:
217.0.0178.97
217.0.0173.96 4-1 226

But the new one is showing these numbers:
217.0.0796.95
217.0.0173.98 3-1 226

They are both a gearbox for the N43 engine, they look identical from what I can see visually (my car is a 320i)... do these number have to match 100% in order to work?

What are the things I need to look for to get a gearbox which fits into my car?
