Lease monthy payments

Wondering if you guys think about 400-470 a month in payments is possible with a lease. 335i coupe, with ZSP, idrive/navi, 19's, auto w/paddles, alpine white/coral red, and comfort. I would do multiple security deposits and really whatever else to help it along, I just really dont want to put that much money down for obvious reasons. I most likely will buy the car at the end, but its still a toss up. Looking for 24/36 months and 10k miles or so. Going to a few dealers this week to see for sure, just wanted some opinions first, thanks. /wall of text

I don't think that's possible to get the 335 with all those option with a payment under $600. Even with $3,000 down and 10,000 miles a year.
Security deposit only helps on your moner factor and with a low down payment you're looking at $650 plus.

well, im selling my car first obviously which im getting about 19-20k for. So if I threw down say, 10k in security deposits or something, really not gonna happen?
On the bmwusa site I used their payment calcs and with 10k down it was about 460 a month, I know thats a little different, but was just curious.

Don't forget the assorted other fees that the dealer will make you pay up front and taxes. 10K down doesn't mean a 10K cap reduction.

Right right, I know, I figured those fees i'd pay out of pocket and the 10k would be from selling my car. Nothing is wrong with my car at all, I love it, I just want a 335i much more haha. If it was 450ish or so I wouldn't even notice it every month cause thats what I paid for my car originally.

Yeah no way to get that payment... I think I got a smokin deal and no where near what you want without putting money down. Here is what I got. 08 335i Coupe, ZSP, ZPP, Navi, Ipod/USB with coral red/alum. I did multiple security deposits. 36 month lease/10,000 miles. Negotiated $500 over invoice, acqusition fee at $625 as opposed to $825, based money factor with no mark ups @ .00188 I think after lowering the mf. I put $120 cap cost reduction just take my monthly payment down to under $600 @ 599.47 so that my security deposits would be based on $600 and not $650. So my payment is $599.47. Smokin deal!!! The manager wanted to hire me and the finance girl when having me sign my contract said, "I heard you know these number better than me, so I'm just going to have you look over the numbers". SOLD!!!

Is it really that bad to put money down on a lease? I know you obviously don't get it back, but was just curious. Is it because incase the car is stolen or wrecked, you basically lose it? I've always purchased my cars but never seem to keep a car for that long, so I was looking to lease this time.

Yes... If you total the car, walla! no more! The best way to do it is to put max security deposits down, which will lower the money factor rate, thus lower your monthly payment just like if you were to put money down. The difference is at the end of the lease, you get it back!

What are the max number of deposits you can put down? Does it differ company to company, dealer to dealer?

If you are not currently a bmw driver, it would be 8. The first only lowers the mf .00015, the other 7 lower it .0007 for each security deposit for a total of .00049 off the base rate assuming no dealer markups. A dealer can mark up the mf by .0003, i think. they can also mark up the acquisition fee from $625 which is what bmw financial charges to a max of $825, which is pure dealer profit. The idea is to get base rate with no mark up on mf, then minus your max security deposits, no mark up on acquisition fee, residual is always going to be the same depending on your miles/term of lease, and hopefully you can get as close to invoice as possible, i got $500 over invoice.

It does not differ because each dealer goes through BMW Financial.

First of all, thanks for all the help, second, I'm trying to mess with some lease calculators online. Say I get the car for 46,000 even. How would the formula and monthly payments look? Aka 8 security deposits, and everything you said, etc etc. (I know I don't have exact numbers, I'm going to BMW tomorrow but I want to be prepared)

I need a little bit more info than that..
I need the MSRP as that is how the residual is calculated,
I need the invoice price (go to edmunds.com to calculate both of these) Or give me your options and I will make sure it's accurate.
I will calculate the rate/residual based on current programs, which ends april 30th if you don't lock in before then.
I'm going to assume your dealer charges maco/training of $480, it varies dealer to dealer but very little in difference. This is on top of the invoice fyi. Do you want the acquisition fee to be rolled into the lease or do you want to payoff on your drive offs? What are the taxes in NJ?

Once you give me all that info, i can give you a pretty accurate # of your monthly payments, total amount of security deposits, total due at signing. If i were you, I'd sell your car, put down max security deposits, and put the rest of the money in an investment and just pay the higher monthly payment, while gaining interest on the money you would have put down.

Remember, the security deposits is like a risk free, tax free investment that you get back in the end (minus any wear and tear at the end of the lease, but you will pay that out of pocket anyway). I think I calculated about a 10-14% return on the money you put down for security deposits that you can't get unless you put that in high risk investment, which obviously isn't guaranteed. It comes out to about $40-$50 savings per month.

FYI... my msrp was $47,725 and I got the deal at $44,405, $500 over invoice.

Alpine white/Coral red/Alum Dash
ZSP w/ 19's
Steptronic w/ paddles
Comfort access
Navi/Idrive

Msrp: $47,650
Invoice: $43,885

7% tax in NJ

And not sure about the acquisition fee, whichever you think is a better idea, because in all honesty it doesn't matter too much to me.

I ran those same options and I came out with a different MSRP and Invoice ($46,550 MSRP $42,885 INVOICE), but I ran your numbers anyway.

$47,650 MSRP
$43,3885 INVOICE
$$44,385 OFFERED PRICE $500 OVER INVOICE
+$480 MACO/TRAINING FEE (VARIES FROM DEALER TO DEALER ALTHOUGH TRAINING IS ALWAYS $180)
$ 44,865 GROSS CAPITALIZED COST
$0 DOWN
62% RESIDUAL BASED ON 10,000 MILES/36 MONTHS
.0023 BASE MF
.00181 MF AFTER MAX MF'S
7% NJ TAX (NOT SURE IF TAXES ARE BY MONTHLY PAYMENT OR YOU PAY ALL UP FRONT, CA YOU PAY TAXES ON MONTHLY PAYMENT)

$599.51 MONTHLY PAYMENT INCLUDING TAXES
$5,400 SECURITY DEPOSITS
$625.00 ACQUISTION FEE (DEALERS CAN MARK UP TO $825)
$45.00 DOC FEE
$300.00 REGISTRATION/TITLE/TAGS
$13.00 MISC FEES (FLAT ADD, COUNTY FEE, TIRE FEE)

$6982.51 DUE AT SIGNING.

Wow, thanks so much, i really appreciate that a lot! One more question, how much would it differ for a 24 month lease? The payments are a bit higher then I really thought they'd be, although not by much. Also, the numbers I got were from plugging the options into edmunds, dunno why they differ.

With all the discounts that people are getting nowadays, ED wont save you that much unless you're planning to just fly there and back which would end up saving you about $2000-2500.

To the OP- a 24 month lease should be cheaper than a 36 month lease. I know it would seem the other way around but it's simply not true. When I was looking into leasing the car I played around with the numbers and the 24 month lease payments were cheaper (even my CA was surprised). Go to leaseguide.com/calc.htm and input the numbers to see what you can come up with.
