JB4 Stages??
Hi guys, I’m new to this forum but I have been doing a lot of research on here and first off I want to say thank you to you all that contribute the knowledge and how tos on this forum. I recently acquired my 335i n54 e93 and man it’s a wonderful car. Now on to my question.
I read that people stated there’s different stages on a jb4? I thought JB4 is just a tuner and there’s no stages to it. What is jb4 stage 1, 2, 2+??? Within a few months of owning the car I have the following mods. Injen DCI VRSF Downpipes After market step Intercooler Boost monkey CP with Tial BOV Jb4 with jb4 mobile app With those mods.. is that consider stage 1? Sorry for being a noob Thanks all you guys! |

There are no longer stages with the N54 JB4. Just map numbers you can toggle between in dash.

You live in California, right?
MAP 2 requires 93 octane, and your state only has wimpy ACN91 octane. I would strongly suggest sticking with map 1. If you run too aggressive for the available octane, you risk the engine. You don't want to be running up against the knock threshold. You could potentially up the octane by mixing in some e85, but you need to be really careful. You need to have enough e85 to raise the average octane of the entire tank, but not too much for the fuel system to handle. E85 has about half the energy density, so you need a lot more of it. The correct amount would probably be around 20 to 25 percent e85 in the tank. I always advocate for tuning and operating very conservatively. I'd much rather leave a few HP on the table than leave shattered pistons all over the road. |

The JB4 can monitor air to fuel and throw you into the safety map if you're too lean but I don't think it monitors the knock sensors as a part of this failsafe

It doesn't seem like it would be difficult to program the JB4 to change maps based on knocking and it should have this. However, my knowledge of how it works is limited.

Raging,
You can view your water temp by accessing the hidden functions in your dash monitor. See here: For clarification in case this video doesn't explain it well. You add the last 5 individual numbers of your VIN to get your code. For the example VIN: wbavb89238vh35123 3+5+1+2+3 = 14 (the lock code you enter) It will show your temp in celcius. It's ok for it to go as high as 109 before dropping back down. That's the highest I've ever seen mine go. |

The Jb4 does have failsafes against engine running lean or over-boosting but you do not want to risk it by running a map thats too aggressive.

I see. One question I have is if it's worth tuning these cars when the only gas I have close access to is 91 octane pump gas? The nearest E85 is something like 40 miles away. Same goes for the closest high octane race fuel station. What's the highest map I'll be able to safely run with 91 octane once I'm FBO?

Hey guys. New to this forum as well. Purchased a second hand 2011 e92. Poking around a few months ago, I had a pleasant surprise to see a JB4 tune kit installed. I don't see any markings on the case, nor did I notice any on the board after popping it out. But, how can I tell if this is a Stage 1 or Stage 2? I'm guessing a 2, but a google search was inconclusive. I purchased their Serial-to-USB cable, and hoped I'd find something in the JB4 Interface app, but don't recall seeing anything definitive there.
Thanks. |

If you have a JB4 it's a stage 2. Otherwise it's just referred to as a Stage 1. Stage 1 tunes didn't have the ability to utilize USB. |
