Thoughts on picking up a 2008 335xi?

2008 BMW 335xi Sedan
100,000 kilometres/60,000 miles
Clean Carfax
Good condition
$7,999 CAD

Is this smart? It'll be my first car, my parents have a 2009 X3 and I really like it. How much more reliable is the straight six in the 328 and 330?

At what mileage do things start to break on this car (hpfp etc)? I think the awd is warranted, heavy canadian snow isn't forgiving (i.e unplowed streets).

I love how my parent's car drives, and love the look of the car, nothing is nicer for that time period and price range imo. I'm just wondering if anyone has insight into the risk/reward of buying this. I want a BMW but I don't know if this is the right one.

Thanks

I agree...based on your circumstances I would recommend against an AWD 335...read the buying guide thread if you're looking for more detail.

These cars require lots of expensive maintenance as they age and with 60k miles you're just likely on the cusp of it...

A 335i would be a bad first car. Your insurance rates will also be insanely high.

If you really want a BMW, I'd say a 325, 328 or 330.

Do you have any DIY ability? If not I would get something like a cheap Civic for a year to learn on.

i would say if your in school full time then no...if you work full time and have the money to put money into maintence then go for it.

A 335i at that price range will most likely need a good amount of maintence unless the owner was really good of maintaining the car.

All work was done by a BMW mechanic, fuel pump and water pump have been replaced.

I don't know, I won't be putting a lot of miles on it. I won't be tracking it or anything, and the fuel pump and water pump have been replaced. Maintenance done by BMW mechanic. Part of me wants to go through with it and thinks

Did you read the buying guide? Or just read through the n54 engine forum? It’s like a trail of tears littered with failing fuel injectors, cracked charge pipes, and burnt out coils...

These cars are an absolute blast to drive when they’re running well, but I can’t imagine being able to expend the resources to try and keep one on the road in my early 20s...

That's a reasonable price given the mileage, but unless you are a do it yourself'er, I agree with the majority here that it has the potential to quickly overcome you with maintenance and operating costs. If you can look after the little things that come up, given the water pump and HPFP have been done, and you got a little savings or cash, go for it. Would be a fun drive.

what about injectors? you need index 12 or newer injectors or they will eventually leak.

I would read the n54 maintence thread in the n54 sub forum and see what kind of work has been done and what kind of work is still needed.

The newer part numbers fixes the issues with the n54 but there not cheap and labor is not cheap unless your diy.

Just be prepared to put some money into the car.
