E91 HiFi upgrade guidance - Aftermarket Headunit
Hi
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time searching the forum and various other online guides but just after some clarification. I’ve a 2005 E91 325i with the HiFi 676 speaker system. Prior to me purchasing the car it had an Alpine INE W925r Double din headunit installed. The plan is it to upgrade the front speakers and underseat woofers and the amp. I have 2 options on the speakers either Rainbow IL-C83 http://caraudiosecurity.com/il-c8-3-...-component-kit Or Audison Prima APBMW K4-E http://caraudiosecurity.com/apbmw-k4...s-for-bmw-mini And then the matching underseat woofers. I’m more than likely going to go with a JL X600/6 amp with the Technics p&p loom. Anyone on here have first hand experience with either speaker sets? As I’m more interested in getting a decent soundstage I’d rather delete the rear speakers, Could I not run a 4 Channel amp instead of the 6 channel and unplug the standard Rear speakers? I.e an XD400/4 would the technics loom still work with this? Would this impact how the PDC works though? I’ve seen things about DSP’s and balanced outputs etc... but if I’m running an aftermarket headunit does this still stand? Is there anything else I would need other than the speakers, amp and plug and play loom? Thanks |

Trouble with trying to run the rears off just the Head unit with Hi Fi
is they won't be amped the way they are now . I guess you could figure out a way of still using the Hi Fi amp to do that but it would be kind of a kluge job. A lot of the better stereo shop guys that visit and used to visit this site are anti rear speakers which actually makes sense. Its called stereo. Rainbows are suppose to be pretty good speakers a little bit below Morels. They use to be mentioned here a lot. If you are running on an aftermarket head unit you might be able to pull it off as there will be adequate speaker out power for the rears coming from the new head unit ,but I would run the fronts and floors(to the amp) of the low level outputs from the new Head Unit. head unit . Front channels to amp and split at that point. Rear channel routed and attached from aftermarket head unit. WTF is semi active though. You might want to look at a Helix 86dsp You could go super active with that. Oh and have you thought about how you are going to make PDC work if you put in a new head unit . I think there are certain harnesses that support this. Most aftermarket head units don't last time I looked. Also the following might be of some help https://www.e90post.com/forums/attac...3&d=1329017429 Last edited by ctuna; 12-28-2018 at 06:34 PM.. |

To be fair the more I think about it the more I think running it as a 6 channel amp will be easier. Literally just plug and play then and I can use the fader to cancel out the rear speakers
The aftermarket headunit is already fitted prior to me buying the car and the rear PDC is working correctly so I assume the loom has been fitted already. Only thing that doesn’t work is the steering wheel controls. Not sure what semi active means lol hence why I’m slightly unsure about the rainbows plus they have no power ratings with resistance etc.... |

Other suggestion for a speaker set is Jehnert or Gladen or Helix/match
You probably can get and adapter to make the steering wheel controls work. It might be in contention for what ever they did to get PDC to work . These guys get mentioned here a lot for head unit harnesses. http://www.connects2.com/ I would pick rainbows over audisons but that is me. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1123541 If you wanted to go real deluxe on speakers Morel doors and Jenhert xe 200' for the floors they are exquisite.
