Aux Jack Stopped Working

2011 E90 with Professional head unit. Aux jack worked yesterday, doesn't today. I have been using it to play my phones audio for the last 4 years with no issues. USB port next to it works, cigarette lighter port next to it works, bluetooth still works.

I have tried a brand new cable and a different phone, neither worked. The phones do not recognize that something is plugged into the phones aux jack. If I wiggle the aux connector in the phone I can hear crackling through the cars speakers.

I popped the aux/USB ports out and the connection is clean. Pulled the radio and no issue with wiring or any obvious issue.

I am at a dead end now on what to try next.

Usually if you have usb both the aux and usb come from the TCU/mulf or combox.

or combox

Both these modules are found behind the US passenger side right behind the seat underneath the trunk floor.

Where the TCU is in the above attachment . If you have a TCU the Mulf 2 hi will be under the TCU.

I went into the trunk and disconnected/reconnected the Mulf 2 and now it works again. Have to have the aux jack in a special orientation in the phone to get full sound, but it works. Thanks for pointing me there.

Sounds like you need a new female mini jack plug in the center
console.for

I have seen the whole center pod assembly for sale for about
50 bucks online seems like a lot though.

Are you saying the connector to the head unit? Disconnection/re-connecting that did nothing.

Where is the aux connector you plug into .
In every BMW e90 I have seen its in the center armrest console
arm rest storage area . ( A place that has the usb and aux next
to each other)
we already know the wire for that goes to the trunk to
a mulf or combox.
The aux has no connection to the head unit . The data
or signal goes to the mulf or combox and comes back over
the most bus to the head unit via fiberoptics along with the i
fiberoptic signals from all devices connected to the most bus.

The aux connection is in the center armrest. I can probably count on one hand how many times I have removed the aux cable I use from the connection in the armrest. I fully disassembled the aux/USB connector box in the armrest and it did not fix anything and had no corrosion on it.

Once I disconnected/reconnected the multiple wire connection to the Mulf 2 in the trunk, it works again. I am guessing there is an issue with the aux connection to the Mulf 2 and I knocked some corrosion off or something.

not to many things there socket module in center console ,
cable to mulf, mulf itself.

I suppose you have changed out your mini jack cable to the
phone.

There is sometimes a usb hub in the older cars . It's located
in the driver side kick panel (US driver side)

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/

circuits diagrams can be looked up in the above link.

Seems like replacing the socket and cable would be the easy
first step . In that order. If you had a cable and socket you could
isolate those items by plugging it directly into the muff for a test.
12 bucks at that site not a lot to loose.

All of this points to a phone and/or cable problem.

Starting with the phones not recognizing that a cable is plugged into their headphone jack, this is an analog function, what the other end is plugged into, or not plugged into, does not matter. If everything with both the phone, and the cable, was good, the phone would recognize that a cable was plugged in.

Second, the scratchy sound you hear when you wiggle the cable at the phone, this points to a poor connection at the phone, either because a worn cable, worn headphone jack, damaged cable, corroded/dirty connector...and the fact that you do hear the noise in the speakers means that the AUX in the car is working.

And, lastly, the fact that you have to hold the cable, or put pressure on it, in some way at the phone, again points to phone and/or cable, and not the AUX in the car.

I think when it started working after unplugging/plugging car harnesses was purely coincidental.

Three phones and two cables. I highly doubt all 3 phones have the same aux port issue. If you plug an aux cable into a phone and don't connect the other end, it doesn't recognize something is plugged it.

The issue is between the aux connection in the arm rest and the Mulf 2 in the trunk.

I have not seen a USB port in the kick panel on the drivers side. I'm not sure what socket/cable I could plug directly into the Mulf to test. There wasn't an aux connection in the group connector. I have no issue spending a few bucks to test it out, but I am not following what you are suggesting I try.

Then you're not explaining your symptoms correctly, and my phone recognizes a cable being plugged in with the other end not plugged into anything.

How does anything I quoted point to anything but a phone and/or cable problem? It's possible you have additional problems, but the symptoms quoted are quite telling.
