very bad misfire that seemed to solve itself
2007 E92 328xi, On my way to the office, I was at a red light and the RPMs started to go down around 300 then picked themselves up to about 600 repeatedly. I was about a mile away from the office so I tried to limp it there driving very moderately. No lights on the dash at this point. At the next red light, the same thing happened and the engine stalled eventually. I start it back up and get to the next red light and the engine stalls again, SES light turns on. At this point, I pull it over onto a quiet side street and put it in park and the engine dies again. I decide to pull codes from INPA on my laptop and I see 4 codes, 2A87, 29cd, 29d2, and 29d0.
I decide to unplug the MAF in order to see if it runs better and it runs marginally better. At this point, I decide to try to limp it to the office again as there was only one red light, and the engine only seems to die as I'm stopped. While I stopped at the one red light there I tried to rev the engine so I could keep it from dying and it worked, but there was a lot of hesitation when I set off. I made it to the office and told one of my coworkers the story and when he came to look it was running perfectly, however, the SES light was still on. I took it for a drive afterward and it was running perfectly. I ran it hard and did a few pulls in sport mode and I couldn't see any issues with it. I decided to plug in my MAF sensor again and see if it runs fine with it plugged in and it runs as perfectly as it did before. Does anyone know what could cause this? I'm hoping it was something like bad gas. |

I mean, I hate to point out the obvious. But it seems entirely possible you have a VANOS malfunction. The most common causes of that are clogged or malfunction solenoids and oil starvation. And it's entirely possible that fault cleared itself, which meant your car began running normally again. Good chance the problem could return, though.
