ABS, DSC and yellow BRAKE lights in dash

Four warning indicators appeared, all in yellow - ABS, brake, DSC and ABS inside a circle and parentheses.

I've read it could be a wheel speed sensor, a wheel angle sensor, a bad bearing or the dreaded ABS hydraulic pump.

Without a trip to the dealer or connecting to a costly scanner, is there any way to tell what may the cause for this?

Thanks.

Could be bad alignment also. But without a scanner its just a guess. I was getting that when i got a bad alignment job code was steering wheel angle sensor.

When did this start? Did you change any thing? Did you hit any thing?

There is free software out there to run codes if you have a laptop just need the cable. If not Protool diagnostic is the best to have on phone with adaptor you are looking ~$125, in my opinion a must have for BMW owners.

A scanner is essential if you drive a BMW, I started with a generic scanner which is barebones and now I have a WIFI module plus the Carly app. I know that it’s not going to allow for extensive modifications but it does what I need to read codes, change a few functions and register the new battery. I had the same lights as you and used the app to find the front right wheel sensor needed replacing.

There is a way to get CC-ID codes right from the cluster, it might give you a little more info. I can't remember how, I think it was through Check Control.

Putting my money on a bad wheel sensor. Get a scanner and check for codes and drive focusing on the individual wheel speeds. You may find one dropping out periodically.

Happened a week or so ago and I've only driven the car twice since. I did notice the wheel alignment is a bit off and wanted to have that taken care of soon.

Wonder if the alignment being off enough would trigger the steering/wheel angle sensor warning. I recall something about that on an older E60 I used to have.

Thanks for this tip. I see three CC-ID codes related to the ABS lights. Looking them up online I get only generic info.

CC-ID 24 – DBC Dynamic Brake Control Brake Assist Failed

CC-ID 236 – Brake and Stability Systems Failure

CC-ID 354 – Start Assist Inactive

And I have one for low windshield washer fluid. The reservoir is leaking and I will be replacing soon myself.

Is replacing a wheel or steering angle sensor a basic DIY or need to take it to a shop?

Wheel sensor is easy to replace, pull the wheel off and it's a wire that goes right into the hub behind the brake dust shield, it's held in place by an Allen bolt I believe it's 4mm. Once the bolt is out it should just pop out but grime and dust build up may hold it in, if so twist and pull with a pliers. Once out wipe it off, there shouldn't be any gouges or severe marks. Use a flash light and look in to the hole where it goes and you should be able to see the reluctor wheel in there, it shouldn't have any damage either. I pulled all 4 sensor and cleaned them. I attached a photo of the sensor/wire

Steering angle sensor is a little more involved, steering wheel has to come off and air bag has to be removed to take the wheel off.

If you search you'll find a few threads on it, I've never done it so couldn't tell you how involved it it's.

Keep in mind that some models do not have the reluctor ring. My 2011 e90 335i does not have it and when I was trying to fix my abs sensor I thought that was missing so I made a mistake and put everything back in again...

If you're alignment is off, get that done and make sure they reset the SAS. This type of thing commonly happens due to that or wheel speed sensor. Both are cheap fixes. Check those first as going in to have to clean the SAS and ABS unit replacement should be your last and uncommon resorts. ABS module you'll get the 'trifecta' instead and even then, you should try to get an alignment and speed sensor first as a troubleshooting step.

buy a $50 bimmer geeks cable and set up standard tools on an old PC.

cheapest/best.

otherwise just spend the money on protool and the wireless adapter.

The same thing happens on e46's, the triple light.

My money is on the ABS Module.

I agree, none of the codes point to it being a speed sensor or steering angle sensor. Those three lights and codes like that usually point to ABS issues, just like the E46's.

Unless I missed something, NO Diagnostic Fault CODES have been read or reported. ONLY 3 CC-ID numbers. Generally, CC-ID (YES, that's done via "Check Control" procedure using B/C buttons on Turn Signal Stalk) ONLY identify the general nature of the fault and the system or Module which needs to be tested or scanned to DIAGNOSE the fault. Which tire has LOW Pressure would be an exception to that rule, as CC-ID DOES tell you which of the 4 tires is low.

HOW MANY Advance Auto, Autozone, etc. locations are in Atlanta? Most/All of them can scan (FREE) DSC Faults and give you Hex-code related to a fault in a SPECIFIC wheel sensor, or other Specific Fault. Just take a photo of Tool Screen showing each Fault Code read by Scan Tool and post here. We can look up Fault Code(s) and suggest next steps.
http://www.bmwfault.codes/

For future DIY, as "nsjames" suggests, the cheapest way to get the ability to read Fault Codes in ALL Modules with a Windows Laptop is by getting a $45 K+DCAN cable from BimmerGeeks, going to BG "Downloads" Web site, and Downloading/ Installing "BMW Standard Tools" and "E89 Datens". Standard Tools include INPA Diagnostic Software that can read Fault Codes in ALL ~ 20 Modules in your car, as well as reading "Live Data" and doing "Activations" or tests of electrical components.

For anyone interested in DIY (Diagnose It Yourself ;-) see the "E9x References" pdf attached, which also provides links to BimmerGeeks Cable & Downloads sites. Even if you do NOT have DIY experience, IF you can Read the Fault Codes with INPA, Forum members can suggest Next Steps to test/ Diagnose the issue.

First let me apologize the not responding, updating, and thanking everyone for the input and advice. Thank you!

I've been dealing with an ill family member for several months who recently passed away so everything else went on the back burner. Since I have a second vehicle, the E90 remained mostly parked.

Soon I'll be reviewing the replies above and try to resolve the issues. Thanks again for all the help and guidance. Hope to update soon.
