Accelerating Turbo Wear

Possibly the weirdest post you will ever read, but bear with me.

Car is a 07 E93 on stock turbos, covered 67k miles.

I have startup WG rattle + between 1.5-2krpm, add to that noticeable loss in power below 3k. The car drives horribly and is nowhere near what it used to be.

I have a comprehensive BMW warranty which covers everything on the car, but as there are no codes they said there is nothing wrong and the rattle is normal.

I'm personally fed up with it and want to sell it, but I can't bring myself to sell it to a new owner with this very expensive issue whereas I should be getting it replaced under warranty.

So, is there a way to make the turbos wear quicker?

Sounds dumb I know, but BMW aren't playing dice without any fault codes showing.

Running a aggressive map would make the turbos wear quicker,

The question is will they be able to detect that you mapped the car, after you remove the tune and give the car to them to have the turbos replaced...

Did you post a log using MHD before?

I reckon so...

I haven't posted a log yet, would 1st + 2nd gear pulls be sufficient?

Can't you run some logs to prove that boost levels aren't what they should be? Can't you find a BMW tech bulletin somewhere that says wastegate rattle isn't acceptable?

I would think that you should be able to find some sort of documentation somewhere that proves that's your wastegate rattle and other issues are a problem.

Or....you could spend an hour and adjust your wastegate rods.....and get rid of the rattle, and probably cure your other issues also....

What do you mean "it drives horrible"? Sounds like you may have several issues....

Need a 3rd gear WOT with DSC off completely (hold DTC button doen for a few seconds) log, from 2.5k to just over 6k after it shifts into 4th ideally.

1st and 2nd are too short.

Also what application did you use to check codes?

I could run logs etc, but the best dealership near me is nigh on useless. And they are the best out of the bunch. Taking a log to them is like showing me quantum mechanics.

All TSBs I've found state some wastegate noise is acceptable which is what they said to me.

And I'd love to work on it myself but I'm not mechanically gifted and will more than likely end up breaking something.

Lastly, when I say it drives horribly it just feels so sluggish and slow and nowhere near what it should be. Factor in drives in traffic and heatsoak a car already driving with poor power levels just gets worse.

Saif - I'll try to get a log with a 3rd gear pull, do you know what the max speed is in 3rd? I've used Btool, MHD (free version) and deep OBD.

Unfortunately.....these are not really the cars for people who aren't mechanically inclined.

Is there a different mechanic you can take it to? Someone that could at least find and document the issues the car has? Then you could take that to the BMW dealership?

Watch some YouTube videos...... adjusting the wastegate arms isn't difficult. There could be other issues also like coils, plugs, injectors, boost solenoids, vacuum lines, LPFP, HPFP, etc,etc.....there is a lot of things that can act up on these cars.

You'll be hitting 100mph or more if you max out 3rd gear. You can shift into 4th at just after 6000rpm, and then back off after a second or two, that should be sufficient.

Do it in a safe place and be careful.

MHD will only show DME codes if I'm not mistaken, use INPA (free) or Bimmergeeks Protool to check all codes including shadow codes from all modules.

MHD will show most all codes including shadow codes.....I'm pretty sure. I think you can also scan codes with protools for free.....but I'm might be wrong.

The only code I ever see is CDA7.

Ironically there is an ex-BMW guy I go to located directly behind the dealer I go to, however he is always busy and booked out for weeks.

To be safe I might just dyno it as I don't really want to be doing those speeds on public roads.

I have INPA, I'll give that a whirl tonight.

If you drive around in 2nd gear I bet it would make the turbos wear faster...

Otherwise I think a tune will make the turbos work harder but I suspect the dealer will be able to tell...

On stock boost levels it would normally take a long time for that to happen,

He'd have to on full boost constantly to accelerate turbo wear.

lol,

Have you tried tightening the wastegate screw in the rear and using the double, no8 washer trick for the front?

That code should not be related to your issues.

Post a 3rd gear log, when you can then we can see how the turbos doing. Make sure you have boost target, psi and WGDC etc logged.

That's what I would do....fixing the wastegate rattle is actually pretty easy.

I'd be careful with that. Really the best way to wear out the turbos is to run an aggressive setup, but if the dealer finds out, good luck!

Don't know if this will help but maybe it can help make a case for you.

https://www.bmwblog.com/2012/08/16/n...stegates-only/

Looks like it was an "Emissions problem." Obviously you are out of the BMW supplied warranty for this. However, it proves a technical point about wastegate rattle needing to be replaced.

Quote:
BMW NA has agreed to extend, to a total of 8 years or 82,000 miles, whichever comes first, the emissions warranties covering the Settlement Class Members’ vehicles for any failure of a turbocharger caused by a defect in a turbocharger wastegate. The terms of the original New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty and applicable emissions warranty still apply. BMW NA will not provide warranty coverage to any Settlement Class Member’s vehicle containing modifications or alterations to the turbocharger or its wastegates (software, hardware or otherwise), or evidencing other conditions not normally covered under the original New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or applicable emissions warranty.

Modifications excluded from warranty coverage include any aftermarket parts that affect the turbocharger system, or if there are other conditions that would normally exclude it from warranty coverage.

Would him running a jb4 show increased boost levels since it’s a piggyback and intercepts the signal?
