E9X TMPS lifespan - how long they last.

It is time for new tires on my 09 LCI E91.
TPMS sensors are original and operational.
I considering to replace them this time based on their age (12years/100K miles)

Online search suggest 5-12 years life expectancy and/or undefined number of transmissions.

It would be great to get some community feedback/data - please vote.

I'm in the same position but with a 2010 production date LCI E90. I went looking for battery status in INPA (isn't working right), ISTA (no TPMS battery status) and a Foxwell NT520. I don't know if it's at all accurate, but the Foxwell indicated 7-10 months left for the 4 sensors.

Seems like the options are the Foxwell universal TPMS, the Autel universal TPMS (and buying their programming tools), buy the Huf OEM brand or take whatever Discount throws in there. The Foxwell and Autel are about 4/$100 for the sensor and then you need $100 programming tool with a life rated at 5-6 years. Discount sells TPMS sensors for $60 each. FCP sells the Huf for $75 each, although I've seem what appears to be the same Huf sensor for about half of that elsewhere.

Mark963 - yours are probably RDE012V21 (my 09 needs RDE048V21).

I got RDE012V21 in the fall for the new winter wheel (and tire) set LCI E70.
No programing, made in Germany, worked out of the box, $45 each HUF North America RDE012V21

I admire folks who want to know the Data/ Statistics: Science, Surveys, that stuff.

Few Folks on this Forum probably have owned their vehicle since new, have NO idea what the history of the Tire Pressure Sensors on their vehicle is, and have NO Diagnostic Software (INPA, etc.) to properly test or diagnose the sensors (months of battery remaining, etc.). Most have NEVER changed their Sensors, and most rely on reports from the techs that do the work.

Can't you find one or more reliable tire shops or Indy BMW shops to ask about that. THAT would be the "Best Evidence". Also, the SIMPLE TPMS System was used on 2010 (9/2009) and later E9x Models, and with NO Transmitters in the Wheel Wells, I would think Battery Life would differ. Possibly DIFFERENT batteries ~ 5 years later, or now nearly 12 years since that change?

Details, Details, "The Devil is ALWAYS in the Details".

This will be good advice when girlfriends/wives learn to use pressure gauges, or even that they exist.

LOL, so true. But Im not getting out and climbing on the hood to try and test the pressure of a rotating wheel at 80mph either. Having a notification that pressure is low while moving BEFORE you notice something is up is kinda useful.

I picked up a nail on the trip and every time I got a notification Id pull in to air it back up, nice way to continue the trip until I could get someplace to patch and plug it.

Imagine people who drive for a living do a "pre-trip inspection."

I feel part of why I want to change my own oil on every car, is just that--get under it and see what's going on. It's even tougher with many cars being fully covered underneath.

I replaced when I got new tires, more so for "time" not mileage. I think it was at the 9.5 year mark.

But to tell you the truth my wife's GM is on her 3rd set of tires and never replaced the TPMS. I bought the tool to reset for about $20. they remind me of those thermometers when Covid started. They were $80 in 2011, $20 in 2017, and about $9 in 2021.

Oh, and it does bother me that almost everywhere one goes, it costs money to add air. They even accept credit cards today. Ever since I got a 20V portable Dewalt, I never get out my air compressor anymore. Yes it cost $90 but it uses a battery from my tools so it's just nice to not have to get out the big air compressor even for kids' bikes...snow blower, wheel barrow, garden cart...

My 2009 328i was giving false low tire readings about 2 years ago at 50k miles. A tire shop scanner showed low batteries on two of the sensors. I ended up having a forum member remotely code out the TPMS and change it back to the 2006 system that monitors tire pressure through the ABS system. Less headache and it's actually cheaper when replacing tires for them to mount and balance. It also made things easier when getting a second set of wheels for snow tires and not having the low tire error message constantly.

both my bimmer got wheel speed based on abs sensor 'tpms'

Seems to be reliable, also very useful for winter/summer wheel set.

I got warnings even on a 5-6psi difference.

ok I don't have XX psi actual numbers, but is it very useful when I know how much psi I put in my tires at the beginning ?

CA law requires any gas station to provide free air to customers. Almost all gas stations have a compressor with the coin mechanism and a $0.50 or $1 price on it, but all you have to do is go inside to the clerk and tell them you need air. They have a remote button to turn it on.

Honestly that is the only thing that really annoys me about the system with actual sensors. My buddy has a Merc of the same vintage that tells you the actual pressures. If youre not going to tell me the actual pressures then the ABS sensor system should have been the only one used.
