Gear ratio calculations 6MT vs ZF8
Thought this is interesting… The ratios are so short on the ZF even compared to the manual (which has normal ratios in my opinion). >10% shorter 1st gear, >20% shorter gears 2-4.

Nothing specific. These are the top speeds in each gear based on ratio calculations and thought people might find it informative. The short ratio zf was surprising as it might be a bit too short

There is more to the final experience than the what we see doing the number crunching, the overall feel of a car can be very different with just a simple ratio change. I attended a 2 day track event last weekend with my new to me M340i wich is equipped with the ZF8 (probably similar to the one in the M3) and I did not feel any disconfort with the gearing. I remember not liking the gearing in my M235i. I also drove a Manual M2 and a DCT on the same track, same day and the feeling was quite different. I also often fall into spec hunting and over-analyzing but when I finally test drive and do serious driving with the cars I often realize that the perspective I had in mind is a lot different than what I feel in reality.

Thanks man. Me too. I calculated these using the 20 in rear wheel tire diameter so if you find that they are off please let me know and i can update it. But it should be pretty close

What I dislike about the ZF GS6 is that the ratios are just terrible. The gap from 1st to 2nd is huge, I feel it really puts the engine out of the powerband (even though said powerband is huge), even when shifting at redline. Similar story with the 2-3 shift.
And then the 4th, 5th and 6th gears are much closer - too close in fact - which really doesn't make sense on a turbocharged car with such a broad powerband! For a high revving naturally aspirated engine like the E92's S65 (which used the same exact gearbox and ratios afaik, as did the F80), sure. In my mind, the old Getrag 420G in the E46 M3 (and the EUDM 3.2 E36 M3) had perfect ratios. Another excellent set of ratios comes from Honda's K-Series (Type R / Si) gearbox. And this issue also affects the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, which uses the ZF S6-53 which has the exact same ratios as the GS6. One of the things that made me choose the Competition over the standard M3.
