Armrest USB and Aux not working
I recently bought a 335is Convertible, it is an early model and has the CIC navigation, but is pre combox.
It has both an Aux and USB connector in the armrest, but they appear to not function. There is no power at the USB connector (USB stick with an LED doesn't light up), and when connecting my phone, or an bluetooth-aux adapter, to the Aux I don't get any sound. When I select Front Aux in External Devices, it keeps playing music from the harddrive music collection, and the display changes to USB Active and the USB volume control, but I can't change that volume control. The USB in the glove compartment is working to upload music to the hard drive. And the 12V outlet in the armrest is also working just fine. I've dug around the forum but haven't been able to find any hints on where to start trouble shooting. I'm fairly handy, and have replaced radios in other cars, including BMWs in the past. |

In most years the aux and usb come from the Mulf 2 Hi or a combination
of a TCU and a Mulf 2 hi in the trunk. If you have the 6 fl option this is always true up to the years they started to integrate some of the functions in the Head unit which occurred first in Europe I believe.(and towards the end of the e9x series) With USB it is either Mulf 2 hi or a combination of Mulf 2 Hi up to the combox years. The Mulf 2 hi is under the TCU in some configurations. with 6fl programmed in the aux at the back of the radio is dead programmed out. Run your vin through mdecoder.com and see if you have 6fl. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1181654 Last edited by ctuna; 08-27-2021 at 05:35 PM.. |

Apparently the MULF was replaced due to water damage 2 years ago. Found this in the extensive service docs that came with the car.
Digging through the trunk, there is both a MULF and a TCU. Could the MULF need to be coded? Or maybe it's a bad unit? All the cables look good, but I don't know which pins are for the USB and AUX ports. |

If you have a coding setup Standard tools it would be worth running
functional jobs from Inpa to see if the Mulf is alive then reading the coded values with NCS expert and perhaps default coding 6fl. There used to be tis online before bmw or somebody pulled it that allowed you to look at all the wiring and block diagram pinout's . Now you need Ista D to get to the diagrams or search the Forums for related Threads. The earlier idrive version also had a USB Hub that split USB into two outlets the one in the Glove and the one in the center console. It was a small board next to the FRM I believe. My old laptop had a BMW Tools setup. I found the old orignal files, and am re-installing the whole thing. Wish me luck
From what I found on a different forum https://5series.net/forums/e60-discu...-132312/page2/ it looks like I might have a bad MULF. I'll update here once I had time to run more diagnostics. Using one of the various Android tools I also found these two fault codes in the CIC section. E1CF and E1DF, but I can't find a proper description for either. E1CF seems to be related to MOST coding. |

I use the Bimmergeeks version of Standard tools.
It seems to be still there for now. They used to have ista up to and there version was more compact than others but no more. Recently BMW or one of the resellers has been shutting the donwloads down. There are many Mulf to combox conversion threads some have info on the pinouts . The coding subforum here should also be of some use. There was a thread that had all the various downloads for Ista d / plus. Ista D is great because it has all the procedure diagrams part no's etc and is all in English. Ista is like and online manual with guided trouble shooting , shop manual plus. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1847924 diagnostic manual ista/inpa https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...xo19teM9vkTF-C https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...7x8H3pN8h1fMuF https://bimmerprofs.com/diagnostics-inpa-part-1/ https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...lkXEhlQYy4i9Nb https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-P-actually-do https://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/at...1&d=1590283589 https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...kBbC27TJLX3BGe https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...WekqhcC6hsgK2c primary links https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1681573 https://www.nathansbmwworkshop.com/b...or-dean-videos ista problems https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1661945 https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1581663 Last edited by ctuna; 08-28-2021 at 11:47 PM.. |

Wow, it's been a while since I was here, spent way to much time on my sons E46 Coupe, instead of my own car.
- I checked all the fuses, and they are all good. - Running NCSExpert and reading the FA things seem strange, see attached screenshot. No $6FL, am I doing this right? Here is the link to the screenshot, it won't show the image otherwise. https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtN5gY5p70VQj4Fi...hHoig?e=mdd8f2 Last edited by earlster; 10-19-2021 at 07:03 PM.. Open INPA Click on E89 (if there is an E90 option use that instead) Click on Functional Jobs Click SHIFT and F2 for Vehicle Data and that will bring up the full VO list This fault is sounding like a faulty MULF, but as mentioned above if this is the issue it would probably be just as easy to swap over to a Combox instead of fitting another MULF. Loads of How-To's on here as to how to do it complete with the pin-outs for swapping the wires over (without paying a small fortune for an adaptor lead)

Also Mdecoder.com will list all installed options from the factory
by inputing the Vin. Inpa functional jobs F2 and F3 should list all installed modules and tell you that they are talking to the rest of the car. |

I also got the following error codes from it:
Code Beschreibung KM-Stand Vorhanden Klasse 00A6C8 JBE: Heckscheibenheizungsrelais 135432 nein 00CDA7 Botschaft (Status Rückwärtsgang, 0x3B0) fehlerhaft, Empfänger DME, Sender FRM / LM 135440 ja 00A554 KOMBI: Botschaft (Telefon) fehlt 130120 nein 009E71 SMFA: Schalter Lehnenverriegelungskontakt 130088 nein so A554 is the only one that's kind of related to comms, but it's just a missing phone code, so it shouldn't be the reason for this. |

I have one more guess, that there is an issue with the USB Hub, but since my car is a vert, it's under the floor and not easy to get to. Maybe one of these weekends.
I also bought an AVIN unit, and am wondering if I code out the $6FL and then plug the AUX from the AVIN into the CCC, is that something that has been done before? Pros, cons? |

Have you actually checked the USB/AUX socket to make sure both plugs are indeed plugged in? Worth a shot, you never know For info I'm attaching the wiring diagram

Year of the car will effect which modules the aux and usb come from
plus the type of head unit, idrive or pro radio in the US. The 6FL option routes the aux and usb though the module in the Trunk which could be either a Mulf or Combox. Then it is transmitted to the Head Unit on the Most Bus . If you have a piggy back Head Unit it should work as along as the Aux still functions cause that is what most of the piggy back unit's do . Piggy back unit's cannot be used with the original head unit removed. And if you put in a none piggy back unit then everything must go through new Head Unit. There may be a usb hub or not depending on the year of the car . I beleive there was no USB hubs with the Combox cars. The Logic 7 system requires the Most bus be functional or a Most Bus adapter, as the amp requires the fiberoptic Input. There are coding options to code out 6fl that should activate the aux on the rear of the Head Unit on some cars . I would investigate on the Coding subforum. I went back at it today and checked connectivity between the armrest aux and the plug that goes into the mulf2 high. Left and Right have connectivity, GND doesn't, so that explains why my aux is not working.
Now, it appears that in order to get to the aux in the armrest I will have to take out the whole center console, which requires the removal of the rear seat console (it's a convertible) and the rear seats. This seems like a crazy amount of work, am I correct or is there an easier way to get there? This makes it more and more likely that I will simply code out the armrest aux and use the aux on the CCC/headunit to get audio from the AVIN |

Thanks everybody for you answers above. I ended up installing the Avin unit, and coding the aux to use the CIC headunit as mentioned here:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...ght=delete+6fl While I didn't fix the problem with the broken ground connection, I now have my music via Android Auto or Bluetooth, which was my motivation to make this all work. |
