Talking G8x S58 Midpipe - Explanation

We have been receiving a lot of questions regarding the midpipe and the price difference.
Hope this simple explanation helps

With almost every company calling the pipes behind the axle back midpipes, it gets confusing.

the stock midpipe comes with 2 cats, called secondary cats, and 2 center resonators.

Please note that the downpipes also have 2 cats called primary cats but we will not worry about them in this thread.

here is a picture of the stock midpipe

A full midpipe would be a replacement of this entire part. PSI offers a fully straight pipe midpipe (no cats or resonators)

active autowerke offers a full midpipe replacement with 100 CEL cats but no resonators. Here is how it looks

REMUS on the other hand is keeping the stock secondary cats and going straight pipe instead of the resonators (notice how the midpipe does not go all the way back to the downpipes like the previous options). Please note the REMUS midpipe is different than the REMUS connection tubes. The connection tubes are mandatory with the REMUS axle-back for proper fitment.

And last you have options like Akrapovic which is only changing the resonators. This option is similar to the REMUS midpipe not replacing the secondary cats but it comes with Akrapovic resonator instead of the straight pipe

Hope this helped

Cool thread! Isn't there one other popular mid pipe solution? I forgot the brand. But I was curious what it had or didnt over the PSI one.

Yeah, Valvetronics. It's a catless single 3.5'' midpipe.

Great & informative thread but OP should probably update to include this one.

i used the brands as an example of the different setup, the actual brands do not matter for the purpose of the thread.

Whatever brand you are getting, hopefully this thread will help you determine what exactly is being replaced

no check engine light from removing any cats except the primary ones located in the downpipes.

You can still replace the downpipes with the active autowerke S58 catted DP w/ GESI cats and you won't get a check engine light

So which sounds the best for the G8X when paired with catless dp's?

Great thread to see the differences, thanks!

This is the Valvetronic single mid pipe. Quite a different design from the others which have two pipes. This is a two in to one design. Just had mine fitted…LOVE IT!

Fitment is perfect, it's not catching on the cross brace thankfully. I think you have to be careful where you cut the exhaust

if you are keeping the stock axle-back, I recommend a full midpipe.

I like the AA catted midpipe the most as balanced between stock and straight pipe but its a matter of personal preference

Here's the Valvetronic single midpipe paired with SSR catless downpipes. This is the only pairing that meaningfully changes the character and tone of the S58 - everything else moves the sound louder and bassier, while this setup actually shifts the pitch and adds a "scream" that increases the thrill and fun factor of running the car to redline. To me, this is by far the best (and most extreme).

Did the midpipe replace both secondary cats and resonators?

Would you happen to have pictures of the inside of the smaller second resonator? I hear it has a X-pipe in it but i'm curious on if that is true and how perforated it is for it to work as a x-pipe and a resonator.
