Never saw these *inside* one's dwelling before, ofc seen them in common areas, and they kinda make me nervous haha, even though supposedly they won't go off accidentally unless one is a complete moron and puts a flame right up under it.
Anyway, is this just an irrational concern?

Every house in my general area has them. County law for any new home, they must have a sprinkler system. So my townhouse has them and my old house had them as well

My townhouse built in 1999 had them. It was required by code for new construction townhomes. It's now filtered to single family detached homes starting about 10 years ago in my area. Frankly it's a good idea to require them; especially with how houses are being packed together. So many instances of a fire in one home causing damage or lighting up homes adjacent to it.

The house we are building has to have a fire suppression system to meet local fire code because we are more than 300 feet from the nearest hydrant.

Our condo in Asheville has them inside the residence. I believe it is code and am ok with it. If there is a fire elsewhere in the building, maybe the sprinklers help contain the damage.
There was a sprinkler mishap at a nearby building that has a hotel and much fancier condos, which caused millions of dollars in damage, so while I think it is highly unlikely, it can happen. Just need to make sure insurance is sufficient to rebuild inside the unit and replace all contents. Not much else you can do. https://www.citizen-times.com/story/...ge/4876288001/

Ive had them forever. Just be careful moving around them and/or lighting fires around them.
Other than that its just another maintenance item you have to keep an eye on with your plumber, but because they have to be iron pipes other than the heads and a pressure relief valve they are simple. So only occasional maintenance needed. |

Yup. My condo has them. It was a 1890's Westinghouse Turbine Factory converted to artist lofts in 2009. It is required by Boston city code on all new construction or conversions.

No, just living in places that didn't have them, or are you saying EVERYONE has them? Obviously not.

I’ve never had one, but I’ve only lived in OLD condos and older single family homes. I know most hotels have them.
Wouldn’t the maintenance of these fall on the condo though? |

That's a good guess re maintenance...not sure what an individual unit owner could do. I wouldn't tinker w those things.

We mostly just do multi family dwellings like apartments style buildings up in Canada. Not much done in detached or row homes unless requested by the customer. We are more picky about how the building is built in the first place than fire vs the states though.

They save lives, and decrease homeowners insurance premium. You should be more worried if you don't have them.
