Help me diagnose this sound after suspension upgrades
Hey everyone - wanted to reach out on the forums because I'm running into an issue with my car and I'm completely stumped!
Background: 2007 E90 335i auto Recently completed a full suspension upgrade: - KW V3 (new top hats and all rubber/strut mounts/mounting hardware) - all TRW M3 control arms - rear adjustable camber and toe arms - whiteline adjustable front swaybar end links - oem front sway bar bushings - lemforder front tie rods and tie rod ends - front sway bar bushing replacements - 335is trans and motor mounts - whiteline rear subframe inserts - pulled alignment pins - also running APEX ARC8 17x9.5/17x9 with R888Rs NOW HERE'S THE ISSUE I'M RUNNING INTO: Ever since the suspension upgrade/wheel install/ alignment, the car has been making a rotational clicking noise from the front passenger side of the car. The noise gets faster and louder with speed, and seems to fade away under braking and/or turning. I've looked everywhere and at everything. Gotten the car on a lift, and there's no notice when rotating the wheels on the lift (I'm guessing because there's no load on the suspension). I'm completely stumped, as is my mechanic. I have NO IDEA what it could be. I was thinking potentially wheel bearings but there's no slop in the steering wheel and the notice only developed after the suspension install. The noise is relatively loud, it's very audible if you're driving past a wall or sidewalk with a window down. I have no idea where to go next in terms of diagnosing it, hence why I'm posting here. I really appreciate everyone's help in advance! |

It's definitely not the, the clicking is not coming from within the dash - it's very clearly coming from the passenger side front wheel well. Thanks for the pointer though!

First thought is the wheel bearing assembly. The new handling mods could have stressed it just far enough to expose the beginning of an issue. I would hit up a parking lot and do some long circles (in both directions) and see if the amplitude and changes depending on which side you load up. That or you have a slight rubbing from the dust shields.

So i think I've found the culprit!
I was tinkering with the dampening settings on the suspension, and noticed one of the hard power steering lines on the passenger side seemed out of place. Apparently those power steering lines are supposed to have a clip that hold them in place to the steering rack, right at the tie rod connection. I noticed on the driver side the clip was there, on the passenger side, the hard line was right up against the tie rod and seemed to have some play. I adjusted the line and moved it away from the tie rod, now the sound is gone. |
