When should I install RaceChip?

Hey, I have a racechip coming in for my G80 xDrive , however I have to take the car to BMW to replace a tail light, and I was wondering if I should wait to install it after I take it in. Also the car has just under 4000 miles, so should I wait after I take it in for an oil change at 5k miles?

Never. You should pick up a JB4 instead and install it whenever you feel like it.

If you're worried about warranties and the dealership noticing and possibly denying a claim, you shouldn't install anything ever.

You can install it now; you won't have an issue with the warranty unless you break something.

Considering installing a JB4 and that connection looks fairly tight in the video I saw….and yeah, what Mike said!

It’s doable with some sweating and cursing.
Had a racechip in my g82 for 2 years now. Best 600 mod out there. No issues

I've used it with E85, and the higher octane is advantageous, particularly when running on Map 7.

Can you run RC map 7 safely on a manual or should I stick to lower maps?

Its not ecu re-map, its resonable impact piggy-back. You will not lose your head because of it. I would just say, install it when you feel you got used to the power levels. Then you will have moderate improvement for low costs and high octane or DPs later in the process will help farther. But still do. Ot expect BM3 like results.

Map 7 is aggressive for most octanes, and you might be losing power due to your ECU reducing timing to protect the DME.

If you add E85, the octane rating increases, and your car will perform better. This improvement isn't because Racechip made more power, but because RC was underperforming on regular octane.

So, to answer your question, if you add E85, your car will perform better on map 7. However, a better solution is to avoid using map 7 on regular fuel and use it with E85 only.

I agree with this…the JB4 is safer, has more features and makes great power.

I’m waiting for warranty to be up and OBD flash to be available before I mod. (Will do stage 2 with HF catted downpipes, resonated midpipe and possibly a clutch if there are good options available)

Educate us on how JB4 is safer, I think there are several thresholds that when breached trip map 0 but hoping you can clarify. I may be wrong, but if you take a complete moron, or a DGAF YouTuber, more damage could be done with the most inappropriate JB4 configuration than a Racechip. No?

I've had it for 2 years now and have installed it and taken it off and reinstalled it probably 4 times now. I'm getting pretty good at it...but still, if it were me, I would probably wait for the oil change or do the oil change a bit earlier then install it. The process is easy, but I like to route all the cables nicely and install the main head unit tucked away which takes some time.

Regarding the JB4 vs RC debate...it's an old one! My take is that everyone is different and wants different things. I am a set it and forget it type of person, and the RC suits me just fine. If you are worried about the dealership detecting something, warranties being voided, etc., then I think RC is the way to go (or just not do anything). I do think the JB4 offers some advantages down the road if I were to get interested in doing some more tinkering, but right now, RC fits the bill perfectly. Definitely noticeable gains on the butt dyno, exhaust sounds different too, and snappier throttle response. It's already fun to drive stock, but RC puts it on another level. I guess I miss it too much after taking it out that I always end up putting it back in! If I get a couple more years of fun out of it before moving onto something else, that is money well spent!

The JB4 itself is able to monitor the tuning like fuel trims, air/fuel ratio, timing advance, knock, and disable itself if something is going south. It's just a much more advanced setup. You can use it set and forget like most here do or you can use it for more advanced custom tuning like those guys who want to break records.

It also is able to wipe the ECU of shadow codes and due to the extra control leaves the footprint on ECU looking more factory so its a lot safer than racechip on the warranty front also.

People who buy racechip just don't really care about the details and want to believe that because it's simpler looking that its safer or better for them. To each their own!
