iPod - Frequent Disconnects
I have a 120GB iPod Classic and FL6 with Nav. I've had this problem since I've owned my iPod, but never posted about it. I've done some searching, but haven't found any definitive answers.
I typically leave it connected 95+% of the time. It stays completely charged. However, I'd say 25% of the time upon getting back in the car, it isn't recognized by my car. The only way to make it work is to physically disconnect it from the point where it snaps into the iPod, and reconnect. If I disconnect from the USB end and reconnect, it doesn't work. This kind of negates the whole storage pouch benefit, since it's cumbersome to disconnect/reconnect when inside the pouch. I apologize if this has been touched on before and I missed it, but can anyone suggest any remedies? Thanks.

A part of me wants to think it's the iPod going into a sleep mode, however, the intervals between starts are completely random. I've gone 2 days without driving and it starts up perfectly. Other times, I've gone into a store to return to an unrecognized connection after 5 minutes.

Welcome to the club. Mine usually disconnects while I'm listening to it and switches to the radio. The ipod isn't recognized by the car until it's turned off and allowed to sit for a few minutes. This happens with an ipod classic, nano, and my iphone 3g.

I've never had it disconnect once connected, as you've described techforge. That sucks. I may contact BMW or Apple about this, but I doubt I'll get anywhere.

Same disconnect / switching issue to radio
I have the same issue as "techforge" with it switching to the radio randomly....just driving along and it switches. Happens often, at least 3-5 times in a 30 min trip. I have 2008 335xi, no iDrive, no Nav. I have to go back into menu and select the iPhone again... if anyone knows of a fix please post here.

I'm having the same problem today. iDrive wouldn't recognize the ipod connection, and when I had the y-cable plugged into the iPod, the iPod itself kept flashing between the main menu screen and the "ok to disconnect" screen. WTF??? I've only had my car for 6 days!

If you are listening to your i-pod and it switches byitself to FM radio there is a bulletin for this. It is a complete vehicle reprogramming. SIB 65 30 07. This applies to e9x from 03/07 and e70 from 04/07 with 6fl. Hope this helps!

Hi,
I have the same problem after switching from my 4th gen iPod (worked without problems) to a new 120 gig iPod Classic. And there definitely is a pattern to it: It works fine when you start the car the first time. If you make a short break (gas station, whatever) and have the car turned off for only a few minutes and turn it back on, then the iPod is no longer recognized. This is reproducable. As soon as the car is turned off long enough for all electronics to go down (I think this takes 10 minutes or more), the iPod will be back. Looks like a software issue to me. I will have my car at the dealership to get my new wheels and will have them put the newest software on. I will report back if that changes the behavior. |

This issue isn't related to your ipods or the Y cable or even the USB extension, if that's what you're thinking. I use a 4 GB Kingston Datatraveler USB stick loaded with MP3s plugged directly into the 6FL port, and it does the same thing. Maybe 1-2 times a week when I get in the car it just doesn't recognize that there is a USB stick plugged in at all. The only fix is to unplug then plug the USB stick back in and all works normally. It's a pain in the ass because it's difficult to do when driving.
So this is a common defect then? I was hoping it was just my USB stick brand compatibility (though Kingston is usually excellent), but if the problem exists with Ipods too...

Well, I got it back today. Amongst some other fixes, they took care of the iPod disconnection problem and fixed it. Part of the fix was a new iPod 6FL connection cable (the y-cable). It's a new version and looks slightly different to the one I had before. It's more flexible and the box on the cable is a lot smaller. You now no longer bend the connectors when closing the arm rest. They also programmed the progman to the newest version, but they did this because of engine problems, so I am not sure whether this had any effect on the iPod as well. |

I too would like more information about the new y cable. I just picked up a new 2010 335i and am experiencing the same problem with my original ipod nano. I'll ask my dealer about it tomorrow, but wonder if it's a bad cable or if something needs to be updated in the system.
