BMW 328 Starter Replacement
Hoping a bmw tech might chime in here. i have a 2011 328i xdrive with 141k. The starter took a dump so I bought a new one based on my vin with real oem. It says use BMW 12412354701 up to 3/2011. My car is a 2/2011 date.
I pulled the starter and it is a Valeo, TS12E36, which comes back as the FROM 3/2011 part. Called Bosch to confirm that they show a SR0492N as fitting my car and they do. Called local BMW shop and they show an 12417610343 as the most current number that does not come back to Bosch. So basically trying to figure out the diff between 12412354701 and 12417616500. They look identical with the exception that the 701 (bosch SR0492N) is slightly shorter. Thanks! |

If the seller was a BMW dealership (online or local) who gave you that starter using your VIN, then you are fine. Even if that was a third party seller, according to Valeo's catalog, it still comes back to the same one.
If you check on Valeo's online catalog, both 12412354701 and 12417616500 cross referenced to Valeo 438272 (TS12E36), which is a 1.2kW starter. I would also trust Valeo's catalog, given those two numbers matched. The Bosch SR0492N is a weaker 1.1kW starter. The -343 number (updated -701) has not shown up in aftermarket catalogs yet that I could see. Valeo catalog: https://valeo.autocaredata.com/items/438272 Rock Auto sells one for $149.79 + shipping: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=4152&jsn=281 |

Thank you for the info. The dealer had vague info and only a part number to a reman unit..
Real OEM was were I got most of my info. I spoke to Bosch tech and he advised that their 492 unit is the correct unit for my build date and said it has the same power and specs as the Valeo unit. Who knows.. I was in a bind and could not wait for another unit so I installed the Bosch and car starts like new again and it's lifetime warranty. |

Not sure Bosch knows what they were talking about, at least their catalog says 1.1kW. Anyway, it works and that is what's important. The Bosch lifetime warranty helps too. That would be the last starter for the rest of the ownership for that car regardless.
The factory Bosch 1.1kW one was problematic. I replaced one with a TYC 1.2kW, and it has been working great, with faster and more powerful cranks. It carries lifetime warranty too. $68.79 + shipping on Rock Auto. https://tyc.mycarparts.net/applications/3311 Bosch = 1.1kW, reman or new: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...3&postcount=18 |

I can't imagine that 0.1 KW will make that much difference if you get a quality brand like Bosch or Valeo. The job requires removing too many things to cheap out on a $68 TYC...Bosch is lifetime and a proven brand. Car starts like new now. Thanks for your help.
