How to: luxury OEM mats for $5
I had always been slightly disappointed by the OEM mats that came with my car and had been looking at investing in some thicker, more luxurious ones. The problem is that thick pile carpet is difficult to keep clean and I was worried about odours once a few pairs of wet shoes had been on them.
I got the following idea from an article in a French motoring magazine about the Citroën DS, which had a layer of foam rubber underlay beneath the carpets for extra comfort & improved soundproofing. I bought a 70cm x 2m x 10mm piece of foam rubber at a local market for €4 ($5) and used the mats as templates, deliberately cutting about 1cm inside the line so that none of the beige-coloured foam would show around the edges of the mats once inside the car. The result is completely invisible and there is now a nice spongy feel beneath my feet. I didn't glue or stick them down, prefering to just sandwich them between the carpet & the mats. In this way, I will be able to remove them easily in the winter when I put the all-weather rubber OEM mats back in () . I have had them in for just under a week now and neither the mats, nor the foam have slipped at all. The extra thickness does not foul the pedals in any way, although I can't vouch for the clutch as I have the Steptronic. A simple, dirt cheap, but effective 'mod'

Nice! I use a web/lattice foam product (the stuff you put under oriental rugs) to keep my mats from moving after the velcro wore out. Works great, lets the mats breathe better, but little if any cushioning.

I tried that stuff, too: it certainly gripped well, but as you say, it didn't really provide the cushioning I was looking for. I guess it would be even nicer with black foam, but I couldn't find any.

I specified the ones without a logo. I know I'm in a BMW

I'm not sure, TBH. The dealer just asked me if I wanted the logo or not. The two types were identically priced, though.
