Paddle shifter and steering wheel buttons won't work after replacing the steering column

Hey guys, so a couple months ago I had to change the steering column, so I bought a used one from a part out of the exact same car.

Everything works fine with the steering, no steering lock and the steering feels like before, but the paddles won’t shift and all the steering wheel buttons won’t work along with the honk and I have an airbag symbol in the dash so I guess that doesn’t work either.

I removed the steering wheel today to check all the wires and everything seems good. I removed the steering trim and and all cable are connected and seem not damaged. Every wires are looking fine so my guess is that either there’s a connection in the steering column that’s faulty, or I need to code in the steering column to my car.

I tried resetting the ELV with protools, but it gives me error 0x90. I looked in toolset 32 and it seems that the vin associated with the steering column is my car’s vin, so I’m quite lost here.

Is there a way to find the error with bmw standard tools? I don’t want to bring it to bmw and get charged 2k for a small coding problem. Anything helps! Thanks in advance

Car info:

Bmw 335i E90 2007 N54 engine
120k miles
Last 7 digits of vin: KY62085

My money is on this being a clock spring issue. The fragile ribbon cables inside of it will snap if it’s over rotated.

Everything you’re experiencing points to that unfortunately. Not a coding issue; the part is physically wrecked.

Did you swap only the column and carry everything else over? If yes, you likely busted your clock spring. If your column already had one, then swap your old (known-good) one over and you should be back in business.

Just make sure you install it in a position that matches the position of your wheels.
