New Tesla Model Y Juniper

Has anyone ordered one or know of anyone who has?
Has anyone test driven the new one?

I’ve never driven any electric car whatsoever but I have watched a few videos of people taken delivery of the new model Y. I have no idea what it would even drive like compared to my 2011 BMW 335i with 300 hp, my car still drives so good with sport and heavy steering so direct and you feel the road, real driver car.

Prices are sooo high for a new BMW and I want a higher vehicle SUV either 2024 X3 or X4 as I like the coupe style. But even those 2024 used are expensive.

BUT...I was looking at Tesla website and I could get a long range rear wheel drive Model Y for $37,490 (that includes the $7500 federal tax credit) with a few options added (no self driving) it would come to $41,130 (after tax credit) That’s a great deal to get into a new car with all that tech.

I don’t know if I’d ever buy one because I feel like I’d miss the BMW driving feel and the Model Y is so sparse inside. Would the novelty wear off after a few months?

Any thoughts?

Why get a new car if you like your current drivers car? Buying a new car is expensive. Let your old car continue to pay your bank account, or use the monthly payment you would have had and modify it. Increase the feedback, responsiveness, and feel.

Life's to short to drive boring unengaging cars.

Why Tesla? There are so many other manufacturers producing EVs.

Tesla is still number one when it comes to range/value.

If I’m wrong, please list vehicles comparable.

Yes, latter, not the former.
We went test driving latest Model 3 and Y as kiddie wheels for my son about 9 months ago. Passed on both, got him another EV (Lexus RZ) instead.
Very glad we went with RZ, and that was before Musk turned Tesla brand toxic (directly negatively impacting resale vaues!).

If I was shopping for another EV for myself right now, it would be an e-tron GT. New, if budget allows. Used (can be had for ~$45K these days) if you want to be frugal.

Would you trust opinion on internet strangers when buying any car?
I hope not.
The only opinion that matters is yours - go test drive your MY, and see how you like it. Or not.

Yes, if you qualify for the Fed tax credit.

Range - kinda, for the price point. Many other EVs offer longer ranges and more efficient drivetrains (Lucid, Rivian, etc).
Value - not so much, after you take insane Tesla depreciation and insurance premiums into consideration!

There are plenty of other interesting EV options out there, if that's the type of the drivetrain you are interested in.

Price out lease deals, not purchase prices.
If this is your first EV, don't over-commit - stick with leasing. This will also insulate you from EV depreciation.

I have no idea what your budget and priorities are, so here is the full list:

If I were looking for an EV there is no other option than Tesla in my opinion.

That’s good advice. 15 yrs is the longest I’ve own a car, each year I say I’m going to get a new one I test drive some and get back in mine and I still love how it drives. I’ll probably book an apt online to test drive a Tesla to see for myself how it drives. But I highly doubt I will buy one. None of those other ones from that car and driver list of ev interest me. I would test the BMW i4 but I don’t want another sedan, want a bit more ground clearance than 4.5 in. The BMW electric suv are way too expensive for me. Maybe I’ll just get another gas vehicle, CPO X3 or X4. Don’t like the 2025 X3 looks terrible inside and out. Would have to be 2024, yrs below that missing too many options due to pandemic.

I recently drove the new Model Y (Jupiter), and I’ve driven several other Teslas in the past. The new Model Y is a phenomenal car for the price. It’s much improved over previous generations, with significantly better build quality. I specifically wanted to test Autopilot (FSD HW4) in rush hour traffic on a particularly challenging road, it performed exceptionally well.
If home charging isn’t an issue, I’d highly recommend it over any other EVs on the market. The new Model 3 is also impressive and worth considering.

I live in FL where we get a lot of tropical storms and hurricanes, flooding roads is a real problem especially in low level areas of living. Even the model y which is suppose to be a suv is still very low ground clearance and with the battery underneath would this be an issue in streets with 5-10 inches of rain?

Can you play music from an iPhone through a Tesla sound system? I heard Tesla doesn’t like apple. I’m just taking about music stored on iPhone not Apple Music subscription. I ask because Tesla don’t have CarPlay like BMW does. My 2011 335i doesn’t have CarPlay but I just connect my iPhone by cable and it plays on my iDrive with artwork and all.

The Model Y has about 6.7 inches of ground clearance, so an extra 3.3 inches shouldn't be a problem. I think I read on the Tesla forums that one guy drove thru ~12 inches of standing water without any issues.
It's true that Teslas don't support Apple CarPlay yet, but you can still stream music from your iPhone without any problems. I connected my phone to the Model Y, and it was easier than with any other car I’ve owned, after all, Tesla is a tech company first. Also, the navigation system and menus in the Tesla feel very iPod-like, super intuitive and easy to use.

BTW, does anyone know who makes the speakers for the new Model Y and Model 3? The sound quality is freaking amazing. I'm not a pro, but I’d dare to say they’re on par with the optional Bowers & Wilkins systems in BMWs.

Battery is well insulated and sealed.
Having said that, if you need something that can wade through rivers, I'm not sure what you optimal transportation options should be this side of a Wrangler, Land Cruiser, or Defender.

Yes.
BT streaming works just fine, and there are a bunch of built-in apps in the car (including Apple Music). But using those requires paying $10/month for connectivity inside the car.
If you own multiple cars, paying for in-vehicle data for each becomes silly.

Not true.

Tesla doesn't like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, locking customers into their own UI experience. That bit sucks.
But otherwise, iPhones work perfectly as either lock/unlock devices, or BT music streamers.

This is quite literally the worst financial advice I've ever seen on this forum. I challenge anyone to find something other than the E-tron for absolutely stunning depreciation, other than maybe it's sister the Taycan. Used is the only way.

Teslas are great appliances if you are comparing it to say, a Toyota or other appliance, but not if you want something exciting.

Go drive one and find out for yourself. Everything is subjective, but pure straight line acceleration doesn't do much for me. I like turning, hucking things into corners, and in general feeling the car. The tesla is the opposite of that, but again, completely acceptable for an appliance.

I'd suggest you turo some of these cars for a day or two and figure out if it suits you. Way better than just a test drive and you'll know if it's for you.

Get a Lucid Air Pure. 30 cubic feet of cargo and a huge back seat. If you have a BMW, the Air Pure can be had for $60,400. 420 miles of EPA range.

$60K for an Air Pure? You must be talking about a used one, they start at around $70K new, and closer to $68K after taxes and credits. In that case, I’d just go for a used 2021+ refreshed Model S Long Range with 410 miles EPA range, you can find them for under $40K. It's a much better value with standard AWD, air-suspension, autopilot, ventilated seats, charging infrastructure etc.

Yeah, I actually found that the new Model Y has better build quality compared to more expansive Model S .

Tesla build quality is crap. Resale value is crap too. Only to get worse over time.
