My friend is an IDIOT..Pushed my start/stop button 3 times while driving. Any harm???
Yes, I know, this is something a 5 year old might do, but I can't take back the fact that my 25 year old friend is a little slow upstairs and has bad ADD. Anyway, as you can imagine the car turned off after he clicked the button (pretty quickly) 3 times in a row while going about 45 mph and in the process of screaming at him and trying to keep control of the car (since I lost my power steering on a curvy road), I came to a stop and started the car back up with no problems. I know this obviously isn't recommended but I would really like to know if anything possibly got screwed up in the process or maybe have some reassurance as to whether this has happened to anyone else and you've been fine ever since. Does anyone know if it's a standard thing for the car to turn off after 3 clicks specifically? or if there is a safety feature built in that I can correspond with what happened? Obviously the car didn't turn off after one click and I know that is normal but to my knowledge the only way to turn off the car and all the accessories is to hold the button, which wasn't done but the some outcome occurred. Any feedback or input would be really appreciated. Thanks,

if BM came up with a way to shut off the DVD playing feature while in motion why dont they make it a safety feature to not let the car shut off in motion? but damn i doubt ur cars hurt. my friends crazy ex girlfriend once yanked his keys out the ignition while driving and he said his car should be fine. but im just guessing. |

you'll be fine. Turning off the car while moving might not be safe, but it won't hurt anything. maybe if you let the car drag in gear for a prolonged time, but otherwise you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I used to do this all the time to clear an annoying CEL on an old car I had. It only popped up occasionally, but turning off the car for a few seconds always cleared it

Uh, I read it that he was driving and the "friend" reached over to press the button. He was screaming and trying to steer at the same time.
Also, tell your friend there's either a hazard fee for driving him somewhere, or a deposit that he gets back on arrival with a non-FUBAR'd car. |

Yeah well those were my thoughts exactly...but I was kinda more in shock than anything because One-it was completley random and unexpected and Two-he drives an '06 330xi 6-MT himself so I mean you think he would respect these cars enough to not do something childish..but I guess I was wrong. For those who are wondering I have a manual if that makes any difference. (I would think it'd be better if anything for it to happen on a manual than an auto)

Yeah, I know that when you hold the button it will turn the car off whether you're moving or parked, I'm just wondering whether the turn off after 3 clicks is a normal sequence or if something shorted/confused the car enough to shut it off because he clicked it so quickly like a spaz! Thanks for the responses.

Not a good idea imho.
The revs are high, oil being pumped round is suddenly stopped under pressure. can fuck fuel pump also. It will be ok... But i wouldnt do it all the time. My friend did it too me once too.... I was so angry. He is a 335 owner aswell.

So what's the deal with everyone's ADD "friend"? This seems a little odd to me, I don't know many people who would find this funny or fun...
Do they also find cutting the brake lines funny too?

Well I have an auto so it will be different than a manual
When I first got the car, in any gear, I could press the start/stop button and the car would shut off BMW made a fix to this in an update so now when I press my button, it warns me that I'm in gear and won't shut off. Now I haven't tried it three times in a row or pressed it down for three seconds but I'll give it a shot. The interesting thing about this is that in the manual, it says that it's a safety function that it won't allow the car to shut off... I tested it and WRRROOONNNGGG... it shut off. What's this thing with doing things for three seconds or three times anyways? It's like saying "candyman" three times. Is there an evil rule of three that I'm not aware of? |
