Red Gauge Needles
OK, here's a simple mod that I learned from the E46 crowd but works equally well on the E9X series. Personally, I think it really adds a nice touch but hey, that's for you to decide.
Step 1: Remove the primary gauge cluster. The cluster is held in by only 2 screws located right under the gauge hood (pic #1). They are torx bit screws but you can also use an allen wrench if that's all you have. Once you the screws out, DO NOT pull the cluster straight out. Instead, tip if forward (pic #2, then you can slide it out towards you. Unclip the wiring loom from the back and then carefully remove the cluster. It's kind of a PAI getting it past the steering wheel, but be patience and it will come out. Step 2: Separating the gauges from the clear plastic lens. First, put down a towel (or similar) to lay the cluster on. You need to remove 4 screws from the back (pic #3). Then you will need to use a flat screwdriver to lift up each of the 6 clips (pics 4-6). Gently pull the cluster apart and put the piece with the lens to the side. Now lay the rear section with the gauges exposed face up. Step 3: Apply the magic red ink OK, I know this sounds crazy, but it works perfectly. Simply get a red Sharpy and apply one even coat over the white portion of the needles. For the speedo and tach, I used a bit of masking tape but that's up to you (pic #7). You don't need to apply any more than one coat since, in my experience, you can get a blotchy look if you're not careful. Step 4: Put it all back together Just retrace your steps and your good to go. See the pics for how it looks. If you like it, it's a simple mod and trust me, you need a microscope to tell that it's not OEM. Good luck. |
