Climate Control in THIS weather
Hey,
Ginger haired person living in Northern Ireland here so please bear with me when i dont know how to deal with heat Is 2005 E90 Touring seems to take blooooooooody ages to cool down in extreme heat like we are having at the minute, its pretty important now for us as we have a 2 month old and she becomes quite upset if she is boiled. Say when we get in, start the motor, selecte Auto/Air Con on/16 degrees on both zones...........you could literally drive for half an hour before it starts to get really cool. It really struggles to cool the car down at all. Yet my mums Megane would freeze the balls off you within like a mile of driving. Could it need regassed or something? Regards Andy |

Sounds like you need the system re-gassing!
Should be freezing cold There are many mobile A/C vans travelling around now that visit you to do it. |

Do all the fans sound really loud etc when on full?
If yes: Re-gass your air con If no: Replace the final stage resistor (hedgehog) It takes less than a minute to cool usually...

Guys,
Reading this with interest as mine can take over 15-20 mins to get "cool" when set on 17oC. Has anyone had theirs regassed? If so does it make a big difference and where did you get it done. Just spoken to my dealer who wants £170!!!!!! Bit disappointed it needs re gassing, its only an 07 plate - surely it should last longer than that? |

I cant speak for Jinjur, but my snowflake button is on.
Thanks for the recommendation kend, I will give them a call. Just to confirm that having to wait over 5-10 mins for the temp to get cool (even when it is an indicated 28oC outside) is not usual? |

sounds like aircon needs regasssing, my e46 was like that I could drive for 15 minutes and still be no diffrence,
a simple regas done at home about £70 and it would take 1 -2 minutes before it was nice and cold

Hey guys, thanks for all the input.....
Yeah, the "Snowflake" button is pressed ( I am going to ask for that as an option from now on rather than air con. Jinjur to salesperson "Could i get the snowflake button option with that car please?" ROFL ) And the fans are stupidly loud when maxed out so they are fine. It does get cold, it just takes absolutely forever to do so when driving. Regards Andy |

I made the mistake of switching off my climate control for a month as an experiment to see if I really needed it or not.
Guess what it never worked after that so had to have it regassed that was at 2 years old. Lesson is to keep the climate control on all the time. I think the A/C compressor runs all the time - can't see rev's moving when switching a/c on and off.

The "seals" don't normally fail on such a new car. The R134a gas usually escapes. Its a bit crap that within 3 yrs the gas escapes so easily.
My dad's Rover 600 took 7 years to escape its R134a. The longer you leave the regas there is a possiblity that you need to replace other bits and pieces. I found this on my last car cost me £300 to have regas and some pipes replaced (corrosion). By having the a/c off you can end up getting funny smell when you use it again. I suspect that smell is probably not good for you (bacteria build up?) Friend of mine had white dust all over his nice suit when he switched his on after winter.

Not only does it preserve the seals but the refrigerant is also a lubricant for the compressor.
