Kitchen Remodel - Before & After Pics

So, my wife and I finally caved in and decided to remodel the kitchen and dinning room at our place. It was long over due. We have been putting it off for years for one reason or another but when the old cabinets (circa 1975) started falling apart, we knew it was time.

The area of remodel place is pretty small (only 175 sq. ft.). It is consists of a tiny kitchen and a small breakfast area. Since we did not have the luxury of expanding (we live in a townhouse) and budget was limited (we are poor!), we decided to keep the layout the same as before to ;

1. Save money on not relocating any utilities (plumbing and electrical)

2. Spend the money on where it counts : Cabintery, finishes and lighting

The remodel took 2.5 weeks. We worked with a contractor who did everything himself except buying all the materials, finishes and lighting. We went through hell for living in a home with no kitchen and construction dust everywhere. However, we are glad we finally did it.

Comments and questions are welcome

Thanks. The ceiling and lighting is where I could afford to have my design orgasm. Glad you like the result.

Well, Ikea of China ...No. We considered Ikea cabinets first but changed our minds. I think for the price, they make some of the best cabinets for the dollar. The deign and quality of their cabinet doors is top notch for the budget conscious. However, using melamine finished pressed board (MDF) for interiors is not cool if you are thinking a bit longer term than 5-7 years. They fall apart easily. We decided to spend a bit more to get solid wood interiors also - not just the doors.

The wall units at the breakfast area is an old IKEA setup we had which we had to keep for now for budgetary reasons. It will be replaced in near future hopefully with something that has a darker finish to match the kitchen cabinets. Until then, it looks OK as-is.

Already budgeted for Phase II work. It's the one wife uses mostly so it can wait

Looks great, man. I hear you on the old California home design. My friend has a house in the L.A. area that is so narrow you can't even fully open the oven down.

It went from outdated to cozy.

I know what you mean. I recall freaking out on how small and tight everything in apartments are when I first moved to LA yeras ago. My first apartament was only 620 sq ft. (1 BR + 1 Bath). No elbow room for anything but made the place quite cozy to live with a significant other at the time

About $26K for kitchen. We spent another $4K on remodel of a small powder room (done at the same time to save money on labor cost). We bought all of our materials ourselves at deep discount. Both my wife and I are in design profession and have a lot of contacts in the trade.

Thanks ... The big farmer's sink makes a huge difference in washing big pots, etc. The only downside is that without a divider in between, you don't have a luxury of separating dirty stuff to their own side. I guess that's more of a personal preference though, really.

My wife and I picked everything ourselves. She is an interior designer and I am an architect. We have quite different tastes. So it was hard to come with agreement on lots of things but like anything else, you give some and you take some. We never work together on anything for the same reason LOL
