BMW vs Lexus street race ends in potential tragedy (news story/video)

http://queenscrap.blogspot.com/2009/...h-meadows.html

More complete story:

Video of one of the drivers (16 year old) being disciplined by his mom as they are interviewed by police:

http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/loca...t_racing_crash

18 year old in an '06 BMW and 16 year old in an '09 Lexus were drag racing, lost control, hit each other, and the BMW crashed.

BMW had an 11 year old child in the back seat and he's now in critical condition in the hospital.

FRESH MEADOWS, N.Y. - An 11-year-old boy is in critical condition after the BMW he was riding in crashed during a drag race with a Lexus in Queens.

Police say the drivers- an 18 year old and a 16 year old- were racing on Francis Lewis Boulevard just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cops say the 18-year-old driver of the BMW lost control and smashed into parked cars.

The driver, the front seat passenger and the 11 year old were taken to Booth Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the Lexus suffered minor injuries.

A witness tells Fox 5 News reporter Christine Persichette that the Lexus spun around three times before coming to a stop.

the witness added that he was not surprised that a crash occurred because drag racing happens frequently on Francis Lewis Boulevard.

Edit: UPDATE -

"NEW:

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that criminal charges against two Flushing teenagers accused of participating in an illegal street race last week - in which their cars collided and critically injured a 12-year-old passenger - will be upgraded to include second-degree manslaughter following the 12-year-olds death this past weekend. The new charges carry a maximum prison term of 15 years upon conviction.

In view of the tragic death this past weekend of 12-year-old Aviv Babayev who succumbed to injuries suffered in the crash, the charges against the two teenage defendants will be upgraded to include second-degree manslaughter, said District Attorney Brown. Drag racing is a serious threat to public safety. Immature young drivers get behind the wheel and turn our streets into speedways. Their reckless conduct endangers lives. Such illegal speed contests have no place on the streets of our city."

Ouch. What a shame.

Reminds me a bit of the Man Deep story, but here we see these accidents don't always have happy endings (and no that was not intended as a prison pun for mandeep).

Exactly, this is what sickens me.

I've heard of a similar story before where a guy in a Lexus was street racing with his 8 or 9 year old child in the back seat. He was racing against an Evo and the Evo guy ended up crashing and dying.

If you absolutely have to street race, make sure you are only endangering your own life.

But how do you street race by yourself? Against the clock?

oh haha I meant if two people are street racing against each other, make sure they are only endangering their own lives. don't have anyone in your backseat, and make sure there are no pedestrians (see BMW hits pedestrian video in video section) or traffic around.

I hate it when I see street racing videos on youtube where people going 100+ have to weave out of their lane and back in to avoid a regular car going the speed limit.

It's just irresponsible.

Dammit!

Movies like fast and furious just incourage crap like this.

Kiddies (16 year old in lexus, what a tool) watch this shit and get hyper so they jump in their cars and go racing... Not even caring what would happen if they slide into a group of people.

Damn idiots.

BMW should of won though.

e46 m3 would've wrecked any type of lexus. I doubt it was an IS-F, maybe an IS 350 if he was racing it.

But I'm not so sure, from the pictures does it look like it's a 330i to you guys? They did say it was an '06.

330i vs IS 350, the IS will win (in a line).

330 i vs IS 250, then I don't know why the lexus guy even bothers

Yeah, I live around the Brooklyn/Queens/LI area and people in G35s, E46 330s and even older BMWs are always hitting the gas as soon as the light goes green like they want to race you. Doesnt surprise me that this would happen.

I never park on those main streets for just this purpose, people driving like 50+ in a residential area. You mostly only see it at night though.

Not cool at all... but it does beg the question, how hard is it to drive in a straight line without crashing?

I hate to place the blame on the lexus automatically without knowing the details but I just don't trust 16 year old drivers. I barely trust them driving normally let alone street racing.

How do you street race with passengers? Doesn't that add extra weight which would slow you down?

Why the hell would you race with an 11 year old in the back? I don't even drive fast when I'm driving others, unless its a friend coming along for a canyon run who I know enjoys fast driving. So stupid.
