335i: Rebuild project car
So i'm looking at this car with a clean title that needs the front end rebuilt. Everything looks straight but basically i'm trying to get an idea of what all the parts are called so I can price them and make a decision.
Will need: Driver side Fender and wheel well plastic pieces Both headlights bumper cover Bumper reinforcement Hood Drive side Tie Rod Intake hose from filter area to grille area. New grill Miscellaneous lights/wiring in the bumper area Stock front left rim 17" alloy 10 spoke Double scoop dash Driver AND passenger airbag And the piece that has me puzzled right now is the brace/bar that goes from the left fender to the right fender. I don't know what this is called, but in the middle its the hood latch. This last one is the part I need to identify, Everything else I can figure out. If anyone knows off hand the best place or price for any of these pieces i'd appreciate it. I don't need to buy everything new either. Also, what about deployed airbags. Besides the bags and the dash, is there any kind of solenoid that is ruined? Anything that needs to be done to the ECU etc? Are there airbag/impact sensors in the bumper area that will need replaced etc? The car runs fine radiator/fmic all that looks good just a broken tie rod. In this picture what exactly is all inclusive in this area I have circled? What major parts are here structurally? Where do they connect to besides the bolts on either side by the fenders? Another thing, what holds up the radiator/fmic/fan assembly? Where is it bolted to? Thanks a ton! Last edited by klipseracer; 02-28-2010 at 12:25 AM.. |

All airbag sensors need to be replaced, and the ECU may need to be replaced. The airbag control unit is basically exhausted once the airbags go off because it saves a plethora of the data and such after a crash for diagnostic/legal purposes (if necessary).
Also, use a thicker paint brush on the picture cause I can barely even see those lines. |

@erensf & Richwm
Holy crap that is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thank you so much! Now, if anyone has any insight or experience with any part of the process with replacing airbags or the front clip/body work please let me know! I'm still looking for other sources of this information to compare with as well. TYSM! EDIT: What should I do about the parts that are discontinued? I'm sure someone stocks them? They certainly can't have stopped making parts for a car that is only 2 years old. Most manufacturers will produce parts for 10-15 years. |

Out of curiosity, why would the front need a rebuild if it has a clean title. You'll have to excuse my ignorance considering I bought my '06 330xi a couple weeks ago and still havent had a chance to drive it yet (first chance this weekend!)

Funny thing is, unless there is an unexpected chassis issue, or the Wheel housing/engine support, I think I may come out under budget as long as I try to do most of the work myself, which will consume probably the better part of a few months. But thats the point of a project yes? I'm just worried about the airbag system and making sure I get everything together secure and sound. I want it like it was repaired professionally. Has anyone, or does anyone know of someone who has had airbags replaced?

Wait so it has a title which says it was in an accident, but not a salvage title. I guess I'll have to look up the difference.

No. My understanding is that its a completely clear title. Due to the fact that an insurance company basically dumped it to some wholesaler for probably less than 10 grand to get rid of it, the title has 3 owners on the back of it, but its a clear title. Point in case, just because a car has a clear title doesn't mean anything. Just hope that carfax/autocheck report everything that has occured to the vehicle you are buying(not always). Everyone should be very careful when they buy a car for a very cheap price because it would be very simple to run a crumby business that just fixes these cars and sell them as new. In otherwords, always have the paint checked out by a professional to determine if the bumpers have been painted.

I do not keep up with the prices of cars, especially the 330 e90, but that doesn't sound too outrageous for a vehicle with that many miles... Does it have the extended warranty?

Nah it doesn't have extended warranty. And actually the price was below KBB (20k for KBB). But the original owner (I'm the 3rd owner) put 60k on the car in the first 2 years, can't imagine what he did with it.

Anyways, once you find the part number of the item you are looking for--cross check it at the website for Tischer BMW. You can search by part number. If a particular item has been *upgraded* it will give you the new number for the newer part. They also have pretty good prices overall for new parts if you happen to find something you need. Also, if you contact them directly (Evan/Jason), they can be quite helpful in tracking down items that you may need if you explain what you are looking to do. Good luck man. BTW...in response to your original question, I believe the item you circled is part of the radiator support.

My E46 330i was like that. less than years old, 46k miles. Thats a good thing tho, they are freeway miles, not idling getting engine wear.
@magmd Awesome, I appreciate the advice. I will most likely be exploring all of these options. I will keep updating this thread as I move on. Now, lets just see if I can get the car tomorrow ![]() |

I purchased an Autocheck unlimited 60 day account if anyone needs a VIN checked please just PM me.
EDIT: STOP PMING ME! ITS BEEN WAY THE F*CK PAST 60 DAYS... In fact its been over on year since this post so stop lol. I'm tired of emptying my inbox. Here is the report... Pretty disturbing. Quote:
The report is crystal clean. It scored a 94 when similar cars score a 93-92.... The reason this is disturbing, is that I have and will posses a clear title. And I can apply for a new title to wipe all those title transfers off I believe.. That, and my carfax/autocheck is also crystal clean. People need to not rely on these resources so heavily IMO... In any case, Hey, it doesn't hurt to have a clean title/report as long as you realize whats wrong when you buy it! Last edited by klipseracer; 09-07-2010 at 05:35 PM.. |
