Taiwan people~ question on cell phones

Going to Taiwan in 3 days and was planning to buy a pre-paid SIM card in the airport. Then one of my friends from TW told me that is no longer allowed and I must have a TW ID in order to buy one???

Is this true? Also which company service provider do you recommend?

Thanks!

if i remember, i think its true. last time my cousin in taiwan picked me up at the airport and i think he had to use his id to buy. you may want to ask around again as i think it doesn't really make sense. what if you are a foreigner visiting and know no one that have twn id?

My GF who's Taiwanese and was visiting there a month ago says it's true. So big brother-y. I wonder when the British government will pick up the idea.

If you buy it at the airport terminal they will let you, you just need to show them your US passport. It's tougher once you are outside the airport. I was there this May.

Koreans are the worst in Asia when it comes to stuff like this and I doubt it is difficult to get a sim card here in Taipei. Of all the places that I have visited (in Asia) the only place that I know of which does not offer tourists and visitors GSM SIM cards is Korea! I'm pretty sure you can pretty much pick one up at a 7-11 or any cell phone shop here in Taipei.
