Loud rubbing noise when passing over speed bumps when the car is cold

Hi,

Since few months ago I notice some loud rubbing(?) noise when I pass over speed bumps. I don't know where it comes from, but its in the front of the car. It only happens when the car is cold, after some warmup I can pass over speed bumps and there is no noise. I inspected the wheel arches and I can't see anything wrong. The car has stock M-Sport suspension and stock wheels.

Could it be the shock absorbers ? I am afraid that if going to the dealer it is going to be hard to reproduce the problem unless I let the car overnight at the dealer...which I can't afford.

clean tops of all door seals

I had the same issue. after a long rain the car was "scrunching and squeaking" when I would turn slowly into a driveway.. like from street and 90 degree turn up a driveway. Sounded like the structure was flexing. turned out that all was needed was cleaning the door seals with pledge with penetrating oil (seriously) as the dealer did. Said issue may come back in a year or so. It seems that dirt on the seals rubs against the structure, making the noise you hear. odd that

I just started to experience the exact same thing a few weeks ago and it is getting worse. We've gone through some warm/cold spells here in IL and some of the local roads resemble a washboard. The rubbing noise in the front suspension is getting pretty loud when I go over some of the more notable ridges. I have an appointment at my dealer in a few weeks. Stay tuned.

Please give us an update after your visit. I get this same noise. I'm having a hard time accepting that its door seals. Sounds definitely like a suspension issue. Gets worse in the rain and cold.

I have the same issue with my 2007 335i Sedan. The tech at my dealership acknowleged that he heard the noise, but said everything looks fine and did not know what was wrong.

Please keep us posted.

I notice a sound like this, too, but only...
-Since I put on 17" wheels with snow tires
-Pullingout of this particular garage, where I have to make a left hand turn onto a speedbump

It sounds kind of like a compressing spring rubbing something...like an old pogo-stick.

Only when it was really cold. The funny thing is that I took the foreman out to replicate the issue but the temps had gone up a bit and it did not do it anymore. They guy looked at me as if I were nuts. I think it's a normal noise and it will go away when the the temps go up a bit.

I have this exact issue too but am on the regular stock suspension. I am going to the dealer on Monday for a break fluid flush so I will ask about this as well.

Sounds like sway bar bushings, dealer should either clean and lube them or replace them with updated parts, either way fixes it.

stabilizer rubber mount's have measure by factory....and when installing new rubbers, should not use any lubricant!! only water!! and if the problem is not fixed by these.. then it will be front shock absorber "bottom hit" rubbers -> there is also measure by factory to replace them and cut 0.5mm of top at the rubber...and lubricant should not be used cause that will also make noise

I heard from the dealer today that it was the sway bar bushings. They are being replaced.

I had the same issue with my old E46 330. It was bushings as well, and it took care of the issue. Good luck!

Only did it when we had below freezing temps.

I noticed this with my car a few years ago. The only thing I found was that the bellows that cover the pistons in the struts had broken free from the strut body and seemed to be making noise when the suspension compressed.

Sounds like you might have a worn strut/shock or mount? I noticed that in mine awhile back and everytime the car warms up, it goes away. Since I dropped by car, iot doesn't make that noise anymore since changing out the shock and springs. Good luck in your findings.

Hey guys, the sway bar bushings fixed the problem for me. No more rubbing sound coming from the front suspension!

And I thought that I was hallucinating. Glad I saw this thread.... mine is doing exactly this at 30000 miles. Hopefully, they won't argue that I lowered that suspension although it is to be expected.
