Mobile speed camera question

If the back of a MOBILE speed camera van is facing the front of your car but parked on the opposite side of the road, is the speed camera targeting your car or the car in the other lane i.e. Catching a speeding motorist by catching the rear number plate?

Hope this makes sense

Could be either. The vans often use laser guns, which can pick up traffic in either direction (although usually used facing the traffic flow). However, they also use mini-gatsos which pick up traffic moving away.

wouldn't the mini-gatsos need markings on the road to correlate speed and distance?

Yes GATSO's would

Laser equipment is aimed as your travelling towards them.

I don't think the markings are a compulsory requirement. There is certainly no standard layout for them.

To secure a prosecution the SCP just needs to demonstrate independant secondary verification within 10%. This could be based on existing road features etc.

I wouldn't assume that mobiles are targeting a particular side of the road, usually they are picking up oncoming vehicles, but I wouldn't bet my license on it and would be particularly cautious about vans on motorway bridges.

They will be targeting both directions. However photographic evidence of the oncoming driver/vehicle is preferred to just the tail end of a departing car. It doesn't matter which side of the road they park on to be honest.

They do this on a dual acrriage way near my house between two sets of specs cameras, they cover all four lanes ie both directions.

They use those mobile mini-gatsos quite a bit round here and they don't have any road markings. They place them in front or behind the van and photo the rear of the car.
