Does muffler delete lose hp?

Hey,

I recently deleted my mufflers and a friend of mine today said that because of it I was going to lose some horsepower because of the backpressure or something. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not?

Thanks.

From my understanding, if you eliminate mufflers from NA cars, you will lose HP. You should not lose power from eliminating the mufflers from a turbo car because the freer exhaust flow will help the turbos spool quicker.

Stock muffler systems are always made a little restrictive. On a NA car a muffler delete might make you lose gain or have no effect on hp/tq. Meanwhile turbo cars are different. The turbos like less backpressure so the turbo wheels can spin easier, the muffler delete will give you some HP/TQ and might notice a little less lag. Does your friend know that the 335i is turboed?

Its a big deal on N/A cars like others stated...tell your friend he has no clue what he is saying on a turbo car!

If you were to uncork the exhaust right after uncatted downpipes, would it throw off the simms? Has anyone tried a dyno on an open exhaust car yet?

Also, you much does the stock Cat back exhaust weigh?

The power will increase both on N/A and turbo engines when the exhaust system is opended after the collector. N/A engines are more sensitive on header design though. Long and thin pipes is good for low end power and provides a crisp throttle response from idle to midrange. Large and shorter ones is needed for high power on high rpm's.

The entire exhaust with all the water condensation trapped into the mufflers weighs well over 80 pounds!

thanks guys!
he has a g37s and i think he did it to his car so maybe from his experience he thought i was the same for me. And I'm not joking when I took off my mufflers and put tips it sounded like my friends m5 eisenmann. If anyone live around the glendale/burbank area in socal, I HIGHLY recommend Morse muffler in burbank.
