Carbon Motors purchases 240,000 BMW Diesel Engines (335d engine) For New Police Car

BMW has announced that Carbon Motors Corp. has ordered 240,000+ diesel BMW engines for its upcoming E7 law enforcement car, which will allow it to achieve 28mpg and 155mph top speed.

PRESS RELEASE, March 22, 2010
:

The BMW Group has received a major order from the American law enforcement vehicle manufacturer, Carbon Motors Corp., to supply more than 240,000 diesel engines. Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Sales and Marketing, and William Santana Li, Chairman and CEO of Carbon Motors Corp. signed the contract at a ceremony held in Washington, D.C. today. The agreement calls for delivery of inline six-cylinder diesel engines complete with cooling and exhaust gas system and automatic transmission.

Ian Robertson: “We announced the expansion of our powertrain system sales business as part of the company’s Strategy Number ONE. Today’s agreement with Carbon Motors marks another important milestone along this route – with others to follow.” Robertson continued: “We are delighted to support Carbon Motors Corp. with our engine expertise. BMW Group diesel engines have a clear lead over the competition when it comes to fuel consumption, emissions and performance. In this way, we will also help reduce the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of more than 240,000 US law enforcement vehicles by up to 40% over the coming years.”

Carbon Motors Corp. was founded in 2003 and is the world’s first manufacturer of purpose-built law enforcement vehicles. “In the BMW Group, we have found a strong partner who has been operating successfully in the US for more than two decades,” noted Li. “The BMW Group drive system makes it possible to accommodate the mission critical law enforcement needs for performance, efficiency, and driving dynamics. Efficient BMW diesel engines will benefit not only the environment, but – thanks to the fleet’s lower running costs–– also the American taxpayer,” said Li.

More performance combined with lower fuel consumption and emissions – that is the motto of the BMW EfficientDynamics technology that has been standard in more than 1.6 million vehicles the company has sold since 2007. Continuous improvements in diesel engines are also a major part of this program. In recent years BMW diesel engines have dominated their classes at the renowned “International Engine of the Year Awards”. In 2009, the BMW Group sold around 498,000 diesel engines vehicles worldwide – almost 39% of its total sales of 1.286 million units. In Europe the majority of BMW and MINI customers opted for diesel in 2009 – 63% of the more than 761,000 vehicles delivered in Europe were equipped with this kind of drive. Diesel is also becoming increasingly important in the US, where two diesel models, the BMW X5 xDrive 35d and the BMW 335d Sedan have been available since December 2008. Diesel accounted for 17% of X5 sales for 2009 as a whole. In the meantime, almost one in three BMW X5 vehicles sold in the US has an inline six-cylinder diesel motor. The BMW X5 is the premium segment’s bestselling diesel vehicle here.

Engine development and construction is one of the BMW Group’s core competences and is part of the company’s heritage since its founding in 1916. Today the BMW Group has a strong network with a total of 24 production facilities in 13 countries, including three engine plants in Steyr, Austria; Munich, Germany; and Hams Hall, UK.

Some 240.000 police cars in US will use the BMW 335d engine !

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=10169358

Talk about fast police cars Oh, and where is the 335d exclusivity ?

I think that the 3-litre diesel is a perfect match for police cars. Those tend to be really heavy because they are designed like tanks. The 35d engine has enough torque to handle that weight...

I just read this same thing on Bloomberg.com. Since the E7 will be exclusive to law enforsement, it should be easier to spot these piggies on the road. Then again it COULD be equiped with urban camo or invisibilty lol

335d + police car = GAME OVER

I always thought the 335d's engine would be perfect for police use. It's intensely powerful, extremely efficient, and still very reliable. For example, if you compare the 335d to the current police Charger you'll find the diesel is slightly faster and almost twice as fuel efficient. It's an unbeatable win-win.

Unless of course you're a criminal. In which case you're screwed.

That is one menacing police vehicle...I wonder what the sale price is going to be for this kind of vehicle for the enforcement agencies to allow Carbon to make a profit....

I read somewhere that the projected sale price is around $40k, compared to an average price of $34k for a police-spec Crown Victoria.

So the idea is that the police will pay more upfront per car, but will break even after a year or two due to the saving in fuel.

I like them because there won't be anything else that looks like it on the road...

I hate it when I THINK there is a cop ahead in an un-marked charger, only to find out its just a super base model with dark windows.

Interesting......are they going to destroy them after police duty? Since it's so purpose built you probably could not strip them and sell it to the public.

I can't believe the government (owners of General Motors) allowed this. The SH&^ will hit the fan when this hits the papers.

I have followed this since a R&T article about 3 years ago. From what Ive read, current police spec cars are close to 100k, Its about 34 for the car, then all the computer systems, lighting, sirens, bumper pars, paint, fence between front and back seat, custom rear seats. Gun holsters, and trunk retrofit are the other 50-70k.

These are supposed to be 40k Ready to patrol the streets. They can do this because all the components and special equipment will be built right into the car on the production line.

This doesnt help all the current cruisers out there. But their plan is to contract these cars out to replace all existing patrol cars in the US. So future savings from wrecks and what not will be huge. Also working on them will be a huge cost savings as well, since they will all be production vehicles. There will be some gas savings now they are going disel. But that wasent part of the big picture till recently.

Well that's awesome, maybe a wrecked police car will provide my 335d with a future heart transplant when my engine wears out.

Certainly this can only be good for parts availability. Wonder if Carbon Motors will be allowed to sell parts to the public.

about their comfort its a short ride to the concrete slab bed that they are
