Only covered under warrenty for the first 1,200 miles. Active Steering alignments do cost more cause it takes about 3 hours to do an alignment. $300 sounds about right.

uh...no sir...you must be dreaming that alignment is under warranty...regardless if you have AS or not....
I believe warranty means something is broken or malfunction in your car...then BMW will have to fix it for you....not alignment....unless you steering broke and stop turning.... and yes....cost around 300 bucks at dealership...and I wouldn't take my car anywhere else for Active Steering alignment....especially I do not know if other shops will have the equipment and technique to make it right....

Just curious as I recently purchased an E91 with active steering - Is that $300 price for a 4 wheel or 2 wheel alignment? If 4 wheel, that doesn't seem exhorbitant as a complete alignment on my 128i ran a bit over $200.
Either way, I'll still try to avoid the ever present potholes. Tom |

Yet another great example of how a "cool" piece of technology comes with an elevated cost on top of its "option price".
keep it simple, better in the long run. BTW, regular alignment should be in the area of 120 bucks (4 wheel). Dealers will obviously charge more, however the problem with Active Steering is that because it's an uncommon piece of technology it might not be a good idea to have a regular shop do the job.

Can anyone clarify why an active steering alignment would cost more than a normal alignment? I thought the main mechanism driving active steering was in the power steering rack. More specifically, varying the steering ratio at various speeds. Alignments just aren't adjusted at the steering rack itself.

If you check with BMW, they state the vehicle must be hooked up to the test equipment and the steering rack must be put into a service mode in order to do the alignment. The truth of the matter is as long as your steering angle sensor and the total angle sensor on the rack are properly calibrated you can do an alignment on the vehicle just as you would any other vehicle and not have an issue.

no...alignment is not covered...active steering or not....
I love AS and been spoiled by it....when I hop on the new 535GT and 550i without AS...i felt like an idiot with all the 5000 point turn to park.... its a bit expensive to work on alignment work and you are pretty much stuck with the dealership to do it.... and if it fu*ked up.....my pocket is going empty once its out of warranty....

I have active steering on my 335i and it only costs me 100$ to get all 4 wheels aligned. Funny thing was I specifically took the car to BMW because I thought they should be the ones to do it since it has AS and they sent it out to a wheel and tire shop to have it done. Go figure.

I have AS also, and I was told that when aligning the car, there are different car models and various options that comes with the car. He said you just have to choose the right model with the right options and do the alignment from there.......Is that right?
My alignment is now pulling a little to the left, regardless of them double checking everything, which were all on spec. Funny that I had no issues prior to getting the car aligned from a suspension upgrade.........hummmm....
