Do our cars auto-lock?

I came back to my car after letting it sit for the entire weekend to find the inside of it ransacked (center console, change holder, and glove compartment). Luckily the only thing taken was some change from the bin (V1, Shoei Motorcycle Helmet, AND Oakley sunglasses were left untouched. I imagine some kids walked by and noticed the doors were unlocked and decided to see what they could find. They were probably scared sh!tless and only spent a few seconds in the car.

I figure I must have left the doors unlocked by accident since there was no sign of forced entry.

Question is whether or not our doors auto lock after the car sits for a while with the doors all closed. I always imagined/assumed they did...?

The only time it will auto lock is if you hit the unlock button, but don't open anything. Then it will re-lock itself after a short period of time (I think it's 1 minute) if you have that setting enabled.

If you get out of the car and leave it unlocked, then it will stay unlocked forever.

I've accidentally left my doors unlocked numerous times because of the damn comfort access. I just leave the key in my pocket and forget to tap the handle to lock em. Luckily I've never had anything stolen, but the car never locks itself.

Theives must not like Oakleys. I've had my old car broken into twice and both times, two pairs of Oakleys in the center console, combined value of over $400, were left untouched.

Thanks for the input guys. Makes sense then.. I was definitely taking stuff out of the car before leaving for the weekend. Must have forgotten to hit lock.

dcorn - looks like you lucked out! In my case I know it had to have been kids since they didn't even bother to take anything other than quarters and also left a mess of change laying all over the place like they were in a scared rush. The sunglasses were actually in the driver door panel though so they probably didn't look... also, how was your car broken into if you don't mind me asking? i'm assuming the only feasible way is window breakage.
