Sunroof Blew Out!!

WTF, I'm driving home from work in my e90 335i cruising at normal highway speed when out of the blue I hear a
BANG!!!

sounds like a friggin gun shot and I know instantly my sunroof is gone. It was closed at the time, I wasn't passing under an overpass, I didn't see and there is no sign of a rock or any other foreign object hitting it

Anyone ever heard of something like this? I need to go to the dealer but I don't know if it is a warranty or insurance issue.

WHAT??? That's crazy! I've never heard of anything like this- especially with it being closed. Glad you're ok.

Did you purchase the emergency sunroof ejection from the dealer? You might have pushed the button by accident.

i remember a guy with a Z06 had this happen with his top. but just the body panel came off.

i had that happen to me with ma MB ML430....

although i DID pass through a overpass, but i really doubt there was anyone on there throwing rocks, becuase i was going pretty fast, and it would take super aiming to hit the sun roof...

i guess it's still a MYSTERY.....might be UFO

Damn those Xede equipped 335is are fast

. I heard of this before on a VW, but no figure out the problem yet (warranty should cover this).

I'm sure the cars behind me were wondering what was showering down on them. I'm also sure no one was hurt since it was tiny little pieces flying everywhere. Like I said, it more exploded than cracked. I was all the way over in the far left lane so had to work my way over and got off at the next exit. I was wondering if someone was going to follow me off but no one did. All I can figure is it had a tiny crack in it (defect?) and the suction popped it.

Yeah I was thinking this should be a warranty issue. Thanks for the replies.

Thanks J, it wasn't retrievable. I didn't desrcibe it that well in my first post but this picture tells the story better.

holy shit! i hope that didnt hit anyone. my dad has a new c7 corvette and there was a recall for them because of the fact that the sunroofs would ripe off at high speeds. haven't heard of this happening to any bimmers though.

I have heard of this happening with Audi A3 OpenSky moonroof, only a few incidences but has happened. Maybe the German class manufacturers are getting shoddy on quality.

But seriously I dont think too many large pieces flew because the safety glass works real well. When I pulled off the freeway I planned on trying to pull the rest off but when I started I realized it was just shattered in thousands of pieces so I just drove home super slow, and you know how painful that can be in a new bimmer

This happened to my cousin in an MB S class a couple of years ago. but i think he was speeding at the time it happened.

I did too, which is why I assumed it would be a warranty thing- not so sure now. +1 Still take it to the dealer.

It IS tempered glass. It diced up into small pieces instead of large jagged shards...
