Tint & Rearview Mirror Light Sensor

I understand that the auto dimming function is controlled by the amount of light that hits the light sensor in the rearview mirror.

For those with ZPP and tint on rear windshield - Is the auto dimming feature still excellent? (no glare from headlights at night)

Hey there. You guys said the auto dimming works great. And I appreciate it. I just want to know if the feature works well with tint. I get migranes, so if tint really cancels out the benefit of this feature completely, then not going to tint. Thanks

If thats the case, then I'm clueless : ) As you can see I'm trying to figure this out. (Current car does not have ZPP) Other posters said the sensor in inside.

See your mirror?

THERE IS ALSO ONE ON THE INSIDE.

OP- I had auto dimming mirrors in the last two cars with very dark tint and it still helped, not nearly as much as untinted windows but you can still notice a difference.

Sheesh, the amount of ignorance is staggering.

The front mounted sensor (on the mirror) senses ambient light. The sensor that points to rear (the one you see when you're sitting in the car and looking at your mirror) determines if there is a light shining on it (i.e. a headlight) and should dim all three mirrors.

If it is bright outide, then the mirror won't dim. If your tint is too dark then the sensor won't see that as a light source and it won't dim.

How about using 50/60% ceramic tint that avoids all these dimming issues and reducesheat and UV more effectively than 5% limo tint? It'll also be legal and won't cause radio or key fob issues.

Just out of curiosity - if the sensor is on the outside of your car (I'm assuming you're referring to the rain sensor - not technically outside either but close) then how the hell does it "see" a car's headlamps behind you?

Does anybody use logic anymore or has the whole concept of rational thought died?

Wondering if I could get away with 45% - and still have the system function properly? If not, I'll probably skip the tint this time around.

No ZPP in my current car. 45% tint. I just flip the rearview mirror down at night now with no issues. But man is the glare bad from the sideviews at night. I guess forgoing tint for max benefit of auto dim is the trade-off here. Thanks

If you have the same tint all around (ie on the back and side windows) then the auto dimmin mirror should work exactaly the same as it did before.

When glare hits the rear view mirror at a certain level it has to go through the tint to set off the sensor, however the glare ALSO has to go through the tint to make it to your eyes, so while for example the anti-glare is 50% less effective with 50% tint, there'a also 50% less glare going to your eyes.

While this argument seems logical, I can only speak of my current set-up with no auto dimming. Before tint, glare was a bitch. After 45% tint the glare is still a bitch with minimal difference from before. That being said: I would think that no tint would make this particular auto-dimming function more effective.

I swear BMW wants you to burn your eye sockets out with the non auto-dimming mirrors. Or its an incentive to pay the extra 2.5K for the ZPP

Get a piece of tint and stick it over your sensor - see if it dims.

Me, I'm going to do the ceramic tint.

This is good info, thanks. If anyone else wants to post their tint % and experience with the auto-dimming feature, that would be helpful.

I have 15% tint on the back, 35% everywhere else, except front windshield and the mirror DOES NOT dim as much as it use to without the tint.

Which for me I prefer. Pre-tint the mirror would dim so much I could barely make out the shape of cars and could only see their headights.
