Omai Moar Sno!!!

Alright Bostonians, it looks like we're in for another walloping. Check your tire pressure, fill up the gas tank, oh and raid the grocery stores for all the remaining milk and eggs.

As you know, when it snows here, it's effectively armageddon.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/mas...l_into_region/

Quote:
* ACCUMULATIONS... 7 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW... WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE. SNOWFALL RATES OF ONE TO TWO INCHES AN HOUR ARE POSSIBLE FOR A TIME.

* TIMING... HIGHEST AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO FALL LATE TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING.
Color me excited. I love driving in snow.

I am already planning on working from home that day. I do not mess with snow storms that start right before rush hour. That's just asking for trouble.

It wasn't too bad this morning, though I was only going 20-25 MPH and there was nobody else on the road other than the two or three cars stuck getting out their driveways.

I also had the HDC on pretty much the whole time and that helped a lot with stopping.

You can drive with HDC on the whole time? I thought that limited your speed to just a couple mph and you're not supposed to use the gas pedal with it, no?

Maybe, I don't know. I didn't get above 25-30 though. It slowed me down to about 9 or 10 once when I was going down a small hill.

edit: found this:

Quote:
Hill Descent Control (HDC).

Hill Descent Control (HDC) holds the vehicle steadily at a pre-determined speed, helping with the job of brake control so that the driver can concentrate completely on steering. This makes the potentially difficult task of driving down a steep hill or over rough ground easy.

Hill Descent Control (HDC), a driver assistant system in four-wheel drive vehicles, can be activated with the press of a button. When travelling at less than 35 km/h, HDC assists you by reducing you to a constant speed of approx. 7 km/h, or 6.5 km/h when reversing. The brake lights come on automatically to warn any drivers situated behind your BMW. The accelerator and tempomat can be used to vary speed between crawling speed and 25 km/h, but if you want, you can of course move faster or slower: HDC then goes into standby mode. It is deactivated once your speed goes above 60 km/h.
HDC is particularly helpful when driving on changeable, loose or slippery downhill surfaces, such as gravel, snow or grass. Together with ABS, it ensures excellent stability while still preventing the wheels from locking if you apply the brakes on a slope. This prevents the vehicle from skidding and permits you to retain control over the steering.
When HDC deactivates, it goes into fade-out mode, gradually reducing braking force and giving you enough time to again take full control of your speed.

Sporty!

Here's the 9am condition just NW of the city. I'd say we've had another 3" at least since then.
Took about 1.5hrs to dig out driveway, in front of garage and front/sidewalks. Not bad. The plow wall was pretty substnatial. Almost 3'.

Anyone else run synthetic in their snowblower? I'm not kidding. 5w30 Mobil 1.

Are you in an auto? I find downshifting to 1st and letting the engine compression slow me down works pretty good. I've never tried the HDC.

About 20" here at the moment, snowblower got a good workout. It's a beast, no problem handling the huge amount of snow. Didn't drive the E90 today though, had the F350 out and about since I actually had to drive ~80 miles today.

I saw a 335 coupe today with sport tires at the mobile station. He came sliding into the place with no traction whatsoever and when he left, his tires were spinning the whole way out to the main road. So I guess there are still some heroes out there that think they can drive in winter with their "summer" tires....
