N20 Turbo I4 Switchover and Current 3-series, M3, and 1-series Production End Dates
BIMMERPOST NEWS Turbo I4 Switchover Dates and Current 3-series, M3, and 1-series Production End Dates On the heels of the big BMW turbo 4-cylinder (Specs/Info) news yesterday, SCOTT26 has provided (via his post) some dates for the switchover of certain BMW models from the current inline 6-cylinder to the new twinpower turbo I4 motor. We have added end of production dates of the current 3-series, M3 and 1-series, based on official production schedules we have received. Here is the I4 switchover and end of production schedule:

It's upsetting to see the end of naturally aspirated engines in BMW's
Lets just hope the turbo 4 cyl's don't have HPFP problems

Does this mean the 5th gen M3 will be out as a 2014 or 2015 model year? Either way, I'm gonna enjoy this V8 while I still can!

Supposedly not in the E9x. The new F30 comes out next year and will get one or more variants of this engine right from the beginning.
Best regards, south

Seems like there will still be the turbocharged I6 ... jeez you can really feel the end of the N/A I6, V8, V10 engines... If I were u I'll hold on to that V8 for the rest of my life! Things went really fast this time... bummer

I think the 5dr hatch and maybe a rumored sedan will launch first, the coupe and vert will launch one year later as usual.

WOW... nice.
Gonna be a good fight with Audi now that we'll have similar engine trims to compare. |

I see NA petrol engines slipping into history at BMW. Still no word on N55 availability in the next 1 series. Note how the "complete turbocharged petrol engine line up" statement skirts the issue.

The E9x 3 series and E8x 1 series will not get the turbo 4 because they are going out of production soon anyway. Instead the motor will come in new F3x 3 series and F2x 1 series.
BTW, can someone please confirm the alphanumeric code for this engine? It's driving me crazy calling it turbo 4, and I am too lazy to type "TwinPower Inline 4 cylinder" everywhere. |

For the coupe and convertible, I would look for an HO 2L turbo I4 with somewhere around 285hp, and a 1M (or M2, perhaps) with a 350hp+ turbo I4, perhaps with displacement bumped to 2.2L or so. |

Actually, I think I may just use "N20" (with the quotes) as the working name until SCOTT or BMW themselves can confirm. I dug up that article I mentioned to you in another thread: http://www.bimmerpost.com/2010/08/24...ineup-preview/ See the last paragraph. I.e. N20 and N13. Of course, they (Automobile mag) might have just made those up. |

Thanks, M! I hope BMW will confirm (or correct) this soon.
Best regards, south
