In Dash Navigation- the trend is over

According the debates on many levels within the car industry, with smartphones and cheaper options for navigation, car makers are rethinking where to put the money/value for customers.

The new Audi A4 is a prime example, its not standard, this new car, is starting a trend?

Navigation is just one benefit of the in-dash screen. I view it as more of a 'command center' and, if anything, they are becoming more popular than ever.

The G37 has the same in-dash screen with or without navigation.

I couldn't imagine scrolling thru my iPod playlists or my iPhone contacts without the 16:9 screen. Having navigation is simply an added bonus.

I pretty much figured my iPhone can get me anywhere I need to go.. why would I drop an extra 2k on a screen in my dash?

Because the screen does a hell of a lot more than tell you where to go. Bluetooth phone contacts, radio/sat radio/MP3 player and car data/controls all become much more easier to control with iDrive.

It's kind of like using MS DOS to control all of your car's electronic/entertainment functions and features vs using iOS 4.3

I'd rather have a 328i with iDrive than a 335 without it all day long.

The GPS unit in my BMW is way better than that of my Garmin. It knows my direction much better and reroutes quicker. I like the integrated look as well. They are here to stay!

What do you mean by standard? It's usually never standard and has to be added as an option. Anyways as others have said there more to the in dash nav than just the nav. Throwing in a nav into the central control unit is just a bonus that doesn't cost them that much more.

BTW, not too many cars come with navigation as "standard" so I'm not sure where the author of this thread got that idea from as far as it being a dying trend.

True but between my phone and my standard radio, I have all of that already. Sure it may be more graceful, but I wasn't willing to pay the $2k premium. Especially after BMW cheaping out on leather and a decent sound system on my new 335i.

To each is own, but I would never own a BMW without iDrive. It's that useful and intuitive.

What they need to do is stop charging such ridiculous prices for nav. I wouldn't mind having it built in, but not for $1-2k. It needs to be more competitive with standalone options, as does bluetooth. Nav + bluetooth should be $400 max in most cars.

Also, since when did the A4, 3-series, whatever ever offer nav as a standard?

I consider it a safety feature, it's much easier for me to type in an address in my i-drive and the car tell me where I'm going than to type it into my phone and have to be constantly looking down at it to make sure Im going the right direction. IN FACT I wrecked my Infiniti QX4 because of this, looking down for directions for 3 seconds looked back up traffic stopped dead in front of me on the interstate. OEM Navi FTW.

Well, I suppose it would be a mild safety upgrade if you're totally irresponsible like that. You should only program either while stopped, and you can position a portable unit to be closer to your sight lines than the OEM system.

One advantage of a Garmin, it tells you the speed limit on the screen and my Nav sure doesn't. By the way I've never had my Nav updated so what's it cost? Didn't really check but when they did my software for the HPFP problem did that update my map a couple weeks ago? Show's how much I use my Nav in my 335.

The Future? Check Out The March 2011 Build

You'll find BMW Apps.

Easily upgraded SW on your iPhone/iPad/ or equivalent; screen in your dash or on a heads-up display.

Web Radio; Facebook and Twitter is just the start.

Yelp, PrimoSpot, and thousands of apps to follow.

It was the deal-maker for me this go round.

I passed the last time around as the Nav was subpar; the LCI is much improved. Missed it more than I thought, as I travel to many new places for work.

Meh, $2k is too much. Cool setup, but I would be shocked if it costs them a few hundred bucks to put in.

I love my iDrive, and I even have the older version. Don't know why it gets bashed so much... sure it takes some getting used to, and the interface is a little slow at times, but I'd definitely pay the premium for it again.

just like most of people here I do disagree... having a screen in front of dashboard for command control is going to be very, very IN and standard more than ever.

unless someone comes up with a way to make that appear on window directly in front of the driver (without hindering the vision for the road - hence semi transparant, may be?) center screen console, with or without navi, will be necessity for a while.
