What steering does 320si have?
Need help from any si owners. Its driving me mad , just fetched the car from a bmw specialist and they couldn't find anything wrong with the steering. They said its an early e90 without the electronic steering. Its a 56 plate. Isn't it supposed to weight up the quicker you go?? feels really slack and no feel the higher the speed. Then stupidly heavy at low speeds. Theres no vibration from the wheel so don't think its a balancing issue.
If there is no problem then my golf gtd mk5 had better steering lmao! When i 1sit test drove the car it seemed fine i think lol Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Wouldn't know what i was lookin for lol. Basically i think i have the hydraulic steering but would of thought that as you go quicker, the computer or whatever should add more weight. I nearly lost it last night coming to a bend quickly, had to make loads of steering adjustments. sumat ain't right

The Si has standard hydraulic steering with no servotronic so the assistance doesn't vary as such.

ever had any accident? That sounds like a problem with your crossmember. The first thing you should check when a car has such symptoms is the one i mentioned above.
The easiest way to check, but not the best and most accurate one, is to measure the distance in the LH side of your car, between the front and rear whell centres, and do the same in the RH side. If there is any difference in the readings then you know what to do... |

Thanks for the replies. Can't believe that this car doesn't have any variable resistance, thats really rubbish! my old golf did and had much better steering. Surely not better than sort of performance bmw!! It's booked into sytner oldbury on tuesday, really hope they can find the cause. It hasn't been in a crash per check report, but u never know....

The steering is quite heavy at low speeds, this is the same on all of the models.
When you say it feels slack at high speed I think you might be mistaking the pleasent sensation of RWD.. |

Not true. The electrical assistance on the e92 320 is ridiculously light.

Think i might be going mad!! my father has just driven my car and says it feels ok. In a straight line at some speed you can move the steering left and right bout half an inch!! if bmw say that its fine on tuesday, i think i might have to sell her on

Took it to Bmw this morning. Had fr axle (track) adjt-kds & electronic chassis measurement done. Feels much better now with no play. Finally can see what the fuss is about, this is great handling car. Cost me quite a lot tho to get this done lol. They said previous owner proly hit something as the steering was well out.

I have troubles with my steering on 320si, too. Mine now has just 50.000km, but they already checked two times steering in BMW. First they just cleaned and greased it-do not question me what they did, I have no idea (status OK for 3 months), then trouble again, so they replaced part no. 32306769157 (Lower joint assy.) It went fine for another 2-3 months, then the problem appeared again What happens - when car is stopped or very slowly moves, and I turn the wheel slowly and fluently, I can feel and hear little "clicks". This makes me mad. Fortunately I have no "play" in steering. No problem on highways or roads, driving feel is still great. The suspension is OK, we checked it with my "M" service garage (no part replacer, but a real serviceman). I go to BMW on monday, they will check and try to find a solution. Then I can tell more. I did some trackdays with my 320si and cca. 30 laps on Nordschleife, so yes, well, it had some hard times.
