Angry Sunroof goes KA-POW!!!

So I'm driving down the highway minding my own business, when suddenly, out of nowhere, I hear this deafeningly loud explosion above my head. It was kind of like a cannon went off from the top of my car, with the sunroof open. Right afterwards I hear the thousands of little pieces of glass falling down on my sunshade. My first thought was that a large piece of hail had hit the top of my car, as it had just started to rain, but I soon realized that this was not the weather, nor did I at the time pass through any underpasses or under bridges or any other structures and I did not see any UFOs in the sky nor was I hit by a meteorite....

At the time I was driving on a highway at about 65mph and the temperature was about 70 degrees, with overcast skies. There were no cars immediately in front of me. The glass could not have been hot either as I drove through rain just before the incident and there was no sun on the car for at least half an hour.

So I pulled into a gas station and got out of the car and my suspicions were confirmed.... The damn glass just "exploded"! Since I had an appointment I just bought some duct tape and taped it off with a trash bag. Later at the hotel I took a bunch of pictures since I figured this would be a hard thing to prove to BMW that it was not caused by some sort of impact. But then I realized that the glass around the broken edges actually bulges outward! That right there tells me that the glass was under enormous stress in an upward direction, almost like a balloon that got overinflated.

Anyway, I will upload pics shortly. I already called my SA and he already hinted that they would probably not offer to fix this under warranty. For their sake I hope they do because otherwise I will make a fuss like they have never seen before.

Huh? Im confused...What could have possibly caused this? Maybe the tracks are bent somehow and were pushing the glass outwards? Weird...

Boy this seems to be an issue going around. I have to say it does have me concerned too.

At first, my hunch was temperature, when ever I use my sunshade I always leave it cracked a quarter inch. Doesn't seem like that will make a lick of difference.

Our cars are sealed up very tight though. Like the pressure bumps that you get when cycling the sunroof w the windows shut.

What was ur AC system doing when this happened? Was it off? Was it recirculating? Or vented open to outside air like normal?

Keep us posted, this is crazy

At first the dealership will generally deny there's a problem. You will have to push them a bit, but eventually they will most likely fix it......

glad you did not suffer any injuries. that's plenty dangerous, having tempered glass explode from top of your head and have it possibly rain down on your head and eyes!

hope you get this fixed by BMW. they should be grateful you are not sueing them for medical bills! keep us posted.

Can we skip the dealership bs and just go through comp insurance as if it were a windshield? It's so tiresome having to prove things to the BMW dealership. Maybe prove our way right over to 4 rings and 4wd.

Seriously if we can just sticky all the previous victims all into one thread it would save us some time to prove it to them.

This really is getting scary. There was a news story about it too. No way BMW can deny this issue, even though they still won't admit it is one.

Frightening stuff.

Thanks for the sympathy but it was just a quick scare for me, and I'm not easily startled. I can guarantee you though...had this been anyone else driving, with the sunshade opened, there could have very easily been an accident as a result of this!
