E90 LCI Battery Replacement ?
Hello,
I heard that dealer is changing the batteries in the E90 from 70Ah to 90 Ah... Did anyone have it done ? How long it took the dealer ... I heard that they need to reprogram car ... Can't I simply change the VO to 90Ah and re register battery and call it a day ? I would install Odyssey battery .. Any insights ? Thank's |

Had it done on my 2010 E90. Took just over 1.5 hours and that was mainly for the reprogramming (lost my coding changes). The reason for reprogramming is that the higher amperage battery supposedly throws codes. Haven't noticed any other changes in behaviour of the car. It seemingly only applies to some 2009 and 2010 models.

What do you mean "re register the battery?" I heard something about BMWs keeping track of how old its battery is, and adjusting amperage accordingly. So if you put a new battery in and don't reset something in the computer, your battery will put out lower amps then it should because the car still thinks its the old battery. Is this true? Is this something that registering the battery would fix? ...didn't mean to hijack the thread.

According to both Mike Miller and my SA, the charge amount is determined by the IBS (Intellgent Battery Sensor) which is contained in one of the battery cables. If it is not programmed to play nice with the new battery, either undercharging or overcharging is likely - neither of which is good for your car's electrics.
