Heard the infamous metallic clicking noise
So I dropped of my cousin at night n it was pretty cold.. Oh yea it\'s an e90 325i .. Got back home n turned the car off. But then decided to put it inside garage n when I turned it on I heard the clicking noise n I had it inside the garage n it woulnt go away.. After 10 min I turned it off n waited about 15 min to turned it back on . The noise was gone..havnt heard the noise ever since.. It\'s being like 3 or 4 months.. but my warranty is out soon.. N I\'m scare that it could reappear again.. What should I do , ? Was it not bad to hear it only once . ? It has 80000 miles on it . Thanks guys n girls.. Could sure use ideas on what to do .

I didn't know 325i's had wastegates
Just kidding. Scan the car if you have one, if not take it to a dealer before your warranty is up.

They might, sometimes things cannot be reproduced and they could tell you that. There is a chance the problem threw a code, and that would give them an idication of a potential issue. Always better be safe than sorry if it's a noise that was not "normal".

If you've gotten this far and this is the first time you've heard it, I'd not worry about it. It sounds like one of those things where the conditions were just right for it to happen like 1/1,000,000. My old 2008 328i from day one brand new did this several times as week. Dealer replaced cylinder head because it was obvious.
Take it in, see if it threw a code. At that mileage, I bet you're fine.

Valve tap is rarely fatal. Some engines just get it as they age. There's a sticky on valvetronic and cam failures, etc., but most of those issues seem to have been defects (i.e., they happened very quickly). Almost all our cars count as survivors at this point--they survived the initial defects bump.
I had a '93 Maxima SE 5-speed (great car) that had terrible valve tap in the cold--didn't affect power, running, or driveability. I wouldn't sweat something that happened once, threw no code or warnings, and sounds pretty minor. |
